Found we could cut spruce poles only a few miles up the road so we have been knocking out the railings on the new deck. Going to do some on the front... one piece done... then replace the rough cut 2x4 railings on the back deck.

Spruce poles aren't the same as lodgepole... more tapper and harder to peel. Feel bad for my wife, since I only have one arm.... she has to run the draw knife.

Sure changing the look of the cabin!

Yeah that sure looks nice. Funny I always give my wife the peeling logs job as well. But I have 2 arms so no real excuse other than I don't like to do it

Thanks all! It is a lot of work, the peeling being the worst of it. We are going to do one more section on the front porch..the far end leaving 2 openings for access... then take a break from it for a few weeks. Still need to build the log steps and railings. We have ~ 36' on the back porch that we will whittle away at this summer, replacing the rough cut 2x4s.

My wife's hands ache and my arm is asleep.. pins and needles.. most of the time now. Got a granddaughter graduating from high school a week from Saturday so we are headed to Oregon next week for that. Road trip!

Finally got the back deck railings done. Now working to do the upper deck off the loft....the "catio" Have all the spindles cut and 4 of the 6 railing poles. Going out tomorrow to get the 2 I need for that deck and hopefully cut the rails and spindles for the loft. The loft will complete the pole railing project.

Then, look let's see... winter water tanks under the cabin is next on the list.... along with fishing and hiking somewhere in there!

Thanks!

Didn't get any poles cut today.... got invited to go fishing with a neighbor, couldn't pass it up! The neighbor caught 2 fish, my wife caught 6 and I caught 5. Fresh and smoked Kokanee coming up!

Noticed I hadn't posted a picture of the last pieces of railings that went up. This is on the "catio" ! We are still going to replace the 2x4 railings in the cabin and 3, more or less decorative timbers with logs/poles but that is a project for next!

Oh and we did get out on the Colorado Trail this year a bit. Completed another ~80 miles leaving 111 miles to go! So far have walked from Denver to above Lake City at Carson Saddle. The last segment we did hit the high point of the trail and was 90% above treeline for two days... dropped into the timber and a creek about halfway where we camped.

Very nice how those railings turned out! Nicely done. They look like they belong.

East or west Collegiate route? That is exciting getting closer and closer to the end. I have taken a more piecemeal approach to the trail. I started sorta in the middle decades ago. I have completed both of the Collegiate routes as a loop. I am missing segments 1 thru 6 plus segment 25 has not been completed due to crappy weather (snow storm) in more or less the same area on two occasions. So I think I am about 125 short of the entire route, but a few segments have been done more than once with different partners.

Bong and I did the Coney Summit, driving my old but newly re-engined CJ8 in July last year. Bong's accident in 2020 left her with a left leg that can't handle the long hikes with a pack. Little by little, it is improving. Maybe next summer we will try the easier start at Denver. We'll see how that goes. Best of good fortune to your CT completion.

Thanks! It really changed the look of the cabin in a good way!

Well all of the east and a bit of the west.... started on the west but got stopped two years in a row by a 20' cornice on Lake Ann Pass so have the first and last segments of WC done. We will finish it at some point.

We have taken a relaxed approach as well, starting with seg 1 and 2 in 2018, 200+ in 2019..... nothing in 2020, a weird year for all of us... so we've been at it 4 years. We finished the AZT in 2018 after 2.5 years.

We are both VERY goal oriented people so if we start something it will get finished! So... my wife has already announced, no more long trails! I've tried to tell her that, you know we've done sections of the CDT in 4 states in conjunction with other trails we've hiked...! Oh and pieces of the Grand Enchantment Trail....

Does this look better? Already doing the fall cleanup. Won't be long and everything will be covered with snow. Found out long ago if it isn't cleaned up in the fall you'll have a devil of a time finding it when it's covered with 2-3' of snow. Besides just tired of "stuff" laying around!

Gotta get help moving those bags of organic fertilizer a friend dropped off... only 50# but nearly impossible to pick up a bag like that one handed.
