I'm going to have to do something to my newly built cabin with the rain downfall. But I'm not sure I like the looks of gutters like everyone has on their houses. I would like to keep the camp looking a little rustic. I feel like the looks of regular gutters willmake a drastic, more modern look to the cabin, which I'm not really looking for.
One idea I got from these forums, is that I could just dig a trench where the water falls down, put some perforated drainage pipe and cover it up with gravel. This idea is great, but at some point, I think I would like to get to collecting water. Maybe in a few years.
So what have you guys done for gutters and rain collection on your cabins, while keeping a rustic look to your cabin
I'm just looking for ideas. I'm sure there are some great alternatives out there

At my drip line I have cheap rectangular 'landscape' blocks in a line; they break the water's fall or it makes its own trench.
On one side I have my rain barrel for utility water, the water just runs down the one section of metal roofing into my 'collector' c/w filter media atop the 50ish gal black plastic 'pickle barrel'. For the two of us we have never come close to using even 1/2 of it between rain refills. I wasnt about to put up a gutter to feed it if I didnt have to; so far, so good.

The problem with no gutters is you will get splashing and get the siding wet and possibly the rim board and anything under there wet every time it rains.

Very true Brett, and a good reminder I need to put gutters up at the cabin. Even with 2' eves my siding gets dirty water splashed on it in heavy rain. I'll probably do the same thing I did at my shop, cut a slot in 4" PVC pipe, as I still have some of it remaining.
The projects never end..
Actually rained here yesterday, over an inch, a real rarity in June. Helps a bit with fire season.

So, the water 'rolls' over the pvc top and into the slot?

The slot is 1/3 or so of the pipe circumference. One edge of the slot is screwed to the facia board. The outer edge is just about level with it.

I had thought about making a troff like gutter. It looks cool, but sounds like a lot of work
i like paulz's idea, some cut up PVC pipe. But I like the square look better, I think I've seen square plastic PVC type thing at our local hardware store. I think its for finishing or capping posts. That might work
