My tractor has started leaking at the injector pump. It's a small enough drip I can still use it, just put a bucket under the drip. Might pull the pump off this fall but I need to use it this summer. I'm reading that the new low sulfur fuel causes this (as if ethanol in gas isn't enough of a problem). Also read that adding ATF can recondition or swell the rubber seals up and stop the leaking.
Anyone dealt with this on old diesels?

There is also some new additive being added to Diesel as some sort of emissions reduction thing. Dunno much about it, I do not use diesel but I saw some articles about it over the past 2 months, didn't pay much attention though.... Never underestimate stupid screwing shit up and later going OOPSIE...

You're not thinking of DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) are you? That gets injected into the exhaust stream after the engine. That's been around for 10 years or so.

DEF has been required for many; most(?), diesel engines since 2010 model year. The post-combustion treatment gets rid of the NOx cheaper compared to making a diesel burn cleaner and does not reduce power. Ultra low sulphur diesel cuts the PM by a large amount.

No not DEF I am familiar with that, it was something else but as I said I passed by the stuff as I don't use diesel.
It could be that UltraOW Low Sulfur variant but it was something about an Additive so I'm not sure.
Also, it was on one of those News Scraper Sites like Yahoo or maybe MSN News, where a Salt Lick is almost Mandatory. I'm not even sure if it was aimed at North America or the EU which does things a tad differently

I would ID the leaking line/seal prior to pulling anything off. I have old diesel stuff too, 1990 and 1989 vintage. Nothing leaks fuel and runs fine on home heating oil.

Mine is a '74, I've had it 10 years, never leaked until this year. I've identified the leak to a large o-ring that seals the pump head to the body. Gotta come off and apart. Going to be a bear to deal with, buried in there behind the frame and loader. I put a quart of ATF in the fuel yesterday and used it today but probably too soon to see if it helps.

Well I'm happy to report the quart of ATF I put in the last tank of diesel in the backhoe seems to have done the trick. Used it yesterday, no leak! It may not last but at least now I have a rebuild kit at the ready.
