I finally finished the kitchen counter upgrade in our cabin.
When we got the cabin we completely gutted and rebuilt much of it... all while living in it, which was fun (not). Anyway, a friend gave us a great old 1950s vintage Kenmore stove, and we built the counter around it with some secondhand white cabinets and a $12 formica countertop (cheap because it was chipped on one end, which I cut off.
Anyway, fast forward 13 years, it was finally time to replace the stove. Again, a friend came through and gave us a brand new cooktop they bought and later decided not to use. At that time, two years ago, I disassembled the old stove to fit it out through the door, and built a new countertop for the new cooktop. A big toaster oven suffices for what baking we need to do at the cabin, and a big drawer (actually a box on wheels with a close fitting lid) for pots and pans sits under it.
This year, it was finally time to install the dishwasher (20 years old but unused) still another friend gave us, needing only a minor repair. So, the last few weeks after work have been cutting, staining, varnishing, etc., etc., but this past weekend I finally got it all done, and I'm pretty pleased with the results. Oh yeah, there's also a drawer above the dishwasher.
It's all oak plywood with some solid oak trim, stained with 3 coats of Varathane stain/poly. The combo stain/poly is tricky to use but once you get it right it looks real nice. The countertops got another 3 coats of clear gloss Varathane.
