My next door neighbor at my city house wants to replace the fence between us, about 100'. She wants a fancy redwood fence like this, and says estimates are $6-8K. I've offered to chip in but I don't need a fancy fence. Also don't feel like milling the wood or doing the labor.
Does this sound out of line for 100' of this type of fence? It is a halfway expensive area, average house about a mil.

Around here regular stockade fence was almost $100 for an 8’ section last time I looked so 6-8 grand for a nice fence installed seems to be in line

Curious,
In your area are you 'responsible' for 1/2 of the line fence?
Are there legal min. requirements to be met, not just whatever the adjoining prop. owner takes a notion to and you have to match it.
I mention all this because my dad had one neighbor who was 'troublesome' about the line fence. One out of 5 different folks that adjoined his land, but that one....

Thanks IG. She knows I don't need a fancy fence (hoping to sell and move to the cabin full time by next year) and said I can kick in whatever I want. I offered 2K, she's fine with that.

She sounds more than a little generous and reasonable.
I imagine the fence will enhance your property value too, likely beyond that $2k kick-in.

She's done an admiral job of making her house nice: new landscaping all around, new roof, new paint.. and works hard on it herself, I understand her wanting the nice fence.

Paulz, you were fair and she was reasonable. She wanted the upgraded "nice looking on both sides" fence and was willing to pay for the upgrade and you were kind and a good neighbor to kick in the 2K

Fair enough.
In early 2020 I paid 4K for a cedar 6ft fence, about 120 feet with 3 gates. That was before lumber really shot up, IIRC. So 6-8 sounded reasonable for what it is.
Nice of you to kick in 2k, I think that's fair. My neighbor who offered in 2019 to kick in....then didn't when it came time to pay up.

I did my entire back yard a couple years back with cedar, i think it was 200-250ft. I'd have to look back to see what it cost me for all the materials but i don't think it was over $3k.

Well here's the new fence. One skilled worker and two laborers, all no hablo Englais, knocked it out in two days. Plus the contractor who was there an hour each day. The fence boards are mostly sapwood, I don't know what she contracted for. Long as she's happy, all OK for me, I'll pony up the $2k and remain a good neighbor. And get back to my cabin tomorrow...

Ground heave would legitimately tear that fence to toothpicks in about 2 years up here! Looks good other than that though

No ground freeze here. The contractor said it's good for 25 years, he's been in the fence business for that long as well.
Oh, and it turns out the fence boards are cedar, she switched because redwood was 1K more. The fence guy said to stain 'em. 
And.. I went around and looked at her side, she doesn't have the two horizontal rails, just fence board top to bottom. So it's really the better side I guess, but my side still looks OK.

I know, I feel for you guys having to deal with it on foundations etc.. Ah well, every place has it's challenges. Most of my (cabin) property is so steep it's hard to stand on, let alone build anything.

Sadly no. In the evenings we sit and watch the trees grow. On the bright side, if the trees weren't there we'd just be looking at the next hill over anyway. Deep in a valley. I do have a few flat acres on the valley floor but it borders the road and all the humanity that comes with it. My shop is down there.

At least you have cool trees. All we have around is Spruce and Birch. Boring.

In 2020 I didnt know who was buying the house next to us and didnt really want to see them fall-spring so I bought 50 norway spruce bare root seedlings. They where very cheap at $1each. Most have almost doubled in height and are now hip height. Natural fences mean no staining, cheaper to put in and cheaper to maintain. I had the room so that's why I went this route. My other "fence is a 20'x150' forsythia hedge.
