Hi there, I am currently in the planning stage of a cabin build and looking to find as much information as i can while i save up for a plot of land to build a cabin on. Just wondering how feasable it is to learn how to build a cabin with limited experience and where would i find the best resources to start to learn? I am currently living in a self converted campervan which is about the only diy I have done. So i know a bit about electrics, cabinetry etc etc. I have been looking at cabin plans online and found what looks like quite a good design and blueprint. Do you think something like this would be doable for someone with limited building experience?

Everybody has to start somewhere....
Or, a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.
Just being here and following the threads, even if you dont think they may apply, will provide a groundwork for your thinking.
And read as many of the old threads as possible, the info is priceless.

If your looking at a 12x20' with limited experience just buy a shed and convert it.

The construction is basic. Until you get into larger sizes and complex issues. Find what you would like to build and put it out there.
I build mine in the driveway.

What you build may depend on where you build and whether or not that location enforces building codes and zoning regulations.

I've found that there is only one problem with this advice, the end never really comes so that you can stop. There is always something to add, modify, maintain or finish. But, that's the beauty of it. A
small cabin and property promises to keep you busy for a very long time. Learning to build it is part of the "busy" part.

My advice is to be sure your site has excellent drainage prior to hiring someone to put a good foundation down.
Do not skimp on this.
I would also visit in every season prior to building and check out the area you decided to place your cabin.
If you have a lot of trees, clear them out of there prior to building. Make sure you clear enough so a tree cannot fall on your cabin.
I’m not a builder.
This is from experience.
BTW 16 years in and we are not finished with our cabin. Every year we find something else we need to do.

You could watch Shawn James on YouTube. He’s on his second log cabin build.
There are other people on there that have built small cabins.
My husband learned how to do tongue and grove ceiling and room this winter from watching YouTube videos. The room came out very nice.
