Hi.

Is there a way to assure pictures posted in the forum are oriented properly. I've posted with proper orientation only to find they turn 90 degrees. It's a little hard to view others as well. Any tips are appreciated.

No idea, I thought maybe it had to do with tall vs. wide but the picture box is square and seems to accommodate both. Here's a few pics I took Sunday on a road trip, let's see how they come out.

Speaking of taking pictures, seems like every time I pull out my phone cam it's in 'selfie' mode, and I have to find the damn reverse button. I want to take pictures of what I see, not look at my ugly mug. I googled 'how to disable selfie mode'. Nothing, but several 'how to disable the front camera'. Apparently some people only want to take pictures of themselves!

Guess I'll just put some tape over the selfie cam. It will still go in selfie mode but at least it won't be so frightening.

I'm not sure which phone you have, but with and Iphone, there is a switch to activate selfie-mode. It's two arrows forming a circle. They call that the portrait mode. It's easy to deactivate.

As for pic orientation, I've posted normal orientation photos only to find they were turned in the final render of the post. I'm trying to figure that out. I transferred them to a PC and then uploaded them. Maybe that is the problem. Maybe from a cell phone they work properly. I dunno....

It's an apple issue. All Iphone pics turn sideways...

No selfie option on Android. I should have gone Apple at the get go. But then my pictures would be sideways.

No option to disable selfie mode, permanently.

No setting on a phone allows for permanent anything.

switching from selfie mode or to selfie mode is pretty simple and straightforward.

These worked from and Iphone sent to a PC then uploaded. However, some have not. It's a mystery.
I've even turned them 90 degrees, uploaded them and they still did not orient properly. I dunno...

This one will, I am certain, be orientated vertically as it was taken.

I believe this is a problem with this forums software.

I did a test and uploaded the same two images to a different forum. A direct upload same as is done here. When the images show on that other forum, running much newer and different software the images appear correctly orientated.

Also, when I upload those images directly to my cloud account, they are correctly orientated when using that cloud's image viewer. The images appear correctly when transferred to my PC, using any of the viewers that are a part of Windows 10.

However, if I open the vertical image in my 20-year-old copy of Photoshop that image opens as a horizontal, laying on its side. After rotating the image in Photoshop and saving it, it will always then open in a vertical orientation anywhere.

This is because when a phone or tablet takes a picture the image orientation information is stored in the EXIF metadata of the image, along with all sorts of other info. If the software cannot read the metadata it literally does not know which way is up and reverts to default. This could even make the image appear upside down.

EXIF information standards have evolved since EXIF was developed in the '90's. I don't know what has changed but it seems possible that older software can't read some of the info. That is what I think is the reason my very old Photoshop does not know up from sideways.

Sometimes when a phone camera is not held perfectly vertically (a bit too much "up" or "down" tilt) the camera gets confused and uses the last known orientation.

So when I post images here I go through the process of uploading to my cloud, then down to my PC where I rotate and resize and finally upload from there. . It is also one of the reasons why I don't upload many images that I take myself.

Tim, I get that when I take them with my phone. It seems to know which direction I want it, but when I post to the forum, the system leave it as is. What I do it open them in MS Paint with my home PC, even if it looks oriented fine, click on the rotate button and rotate it, then rotate back where you like it and close, it will ask you if you want to save changes, click yes. Then upload pictures.

No a complaint, just a observation.
This is the only online website in which my photographs are turned.

OK, I got it

Yes, the image EXIF metadata is a tricky stuff.
Made some code changes - hopefully it fixes the issue.

It looks like CabinBuilder may have the problem figured out.

I have an iPhone and I regularly had this photo orientation problem when I was new to this forum. I started using an image resizing app that I would use for all photos that I post. That was a workaround that had worked for me. Maybe I won’t need to take that step in the future.
