This is a work in progress. My father purchased a sixty some acre plot in Ohio a while back where he thought our family could have some good times camping, shooting, and hunting. The land is very active with wildlife. A nice selection of deer and turkey.
The land is mostly hardwoods, with a lot of sloping and hillsides scattered throughout. We had thought about building a real small cabin for a while, just to serve as a place to sleep in overnight so we wouldn't have to get up real early to deer hunt. Well, plans changed and we have decided to build a 12x16 cabin, with a loft roof for sleeping.
The land had previously been logged, leaving rutted out roads for access. We had new roads cut in and old ones cleaned up and straightened out. Due to the steepness of some of the roads, it is only accessible about 6 months a year. It requires 4 wheel drive and aggressive driving at times. lol We like it that way, the less people can get to it, the better.
Here are a couple shots of the top of the highest hill, we selected this as the spot to build the cabin. It has a 50 ft highwall due south of us acting as a natural windbreak. In the fall, the highwall is actually very pretty.
Here are some pics after the dozer we rented cleaned the area up, removing a few trees.
This is the 12'x16' frame. We used 6"x6" corners, and we belted the sides for more structural integrity...should a tree decide to fall into it.
After it was bolted together and excess trimmed off at the end of last year. More pics and updates to come.

nice piece of hunting property, really like the spot you picked out for camp. GREAT deer and turkey hunting in your neck fo the woods.
What are you plans for the camp build???? roof ?? siding etc??

We're planning on covering it completely with treated plywood with green steel siding and possibly three small windows. It will start taking shape in the next month or so. It is really a rough area to get to and you have to drive like you're about half crazy to get up the hill in a 4X4. And......that's on dry ground. Basically if you want to hunt in the middle of the winter you better have a 4-wheeler to get to the site. We are really looking forward to getting started on it. He's one of two nice looking racks in a series of photos. The best photo has about four raccoons, three deer and some about ten turkeys.

Turkeyhunter... that spread of yours looks like about 20X32, or somewhere in that neighborhood. What are the dimensions? It's gorgeous! We won't get hardly anything done this month but next month we will, since my son will be out of school for a five week break. He's a big help to me. My son and I both share the name Old Buddy but actually I'll always sign off Old Old Buddy. Naturally, he's the most computer savvy and I'm along for the ride (and the money)Ha! Old old buddy

I once had some land down in Lawrence county. Those massive rock formations remind me of that place. Really beautiful. I am building up in pike county now... the absolute edge of the foothills. Really a nice spot you have there. Good luck on your build.

Here are a couple shots of the floor joists being installed. we had to weed wack the area pretty good...the vegetation was already pretty thick which suprised my Dad and me.

Well, we made a little more progress today. We decided that we were going to build regular partitioned walls, so we removed all of the wall lumber, just leaving the 6"x6" corner posts.
The first thing we did was some minor shimming for the floor support.
Next, we put insullation in the floor.
We were told by a couple fellow cabin builders to use felt paper for a barrier.
We used 3/4" tongue and groove plywood for the actual floor.
Done for the day.
It's geting there. With any luck this week, we're going to try to put up the walls. We've picked up a 36" steel door and three vinyl windows. We've decided on green painted steel roofing. I'll keep the pics coming, thanks for the comments.
On another note, we found evidence of tresspasser/s on the property this week, so we put up a gate on one of the steeper roads at the top of it. It's box tubing steel with four 80lb concrete bags in each hole...dug to a depth of 36 inches. The chain is half inch links. That should keep the vehicles out anyway. I know I can't keep dirtbikes out if they would choose to go around the gate, but like my cousin said, you can't take too much out on a dirtbike. lol

cabin progress is looking great!!!!..i think you will be glad you are during regular studed walls.
On the tresspassers.........just hope they do not hit the chain ----down south several have been killed by hitting a chain or cable riding a 4 wheeler or motorcycle , pick you up a good used gate or a new cheapie gate from tractor supply, till then slide the chain though a piece of 3 " PVC pipe about 8 foot long and pray no one hit's it. I have dealt with this on private hunting property before. NO FUN!!!

Just finished up today with completing the side and back wall. 2 down, 2 to go. Hopefully by the end of Saturday we can have the remaining two walls completed. Sorry the picture quality isn't the greatest, these were taken with my camera phone. Hopefully Saturday evening we'll have all the walls finished.

We came up later that same evening and fished the third wall.
A couple days later we finished the fourth wall and started putting up the 3/4" treated plywood.
Hopefully the next installment of pictures will show the loft joices, loft flooring, then the trusses...hopefully.

Got a little more done this weekend. We're getting close to being under roof.
Here is the loft in place with the OSB laying loose serving as a work surface for now.
Here is the ridgeboard in place with the scabs holding it in place.
Me taking a rest after putting up the tarp.
Done for the day.
My firepit, a few more stones and it'll be good to go.

Hot work! Cooling off a bit now. I'm saving some work for the fall when I can cut a few trees and dig a few holes without suffering too much...
From the looks of it, also in southeast Ohio? Great hills and views!

The sheet metal roof has been ordered, along with enough metal to do a porch off the front approximately 11' X 8'. We ordered the "R" rib in 26 gauge. The color is "evergreen" which seems to be among the most popular, as is the dark red. Anyway, it should be in by next wednesday, the 31st. Hopefully....the roof will be on by the week-end after delivery. I sure have enjoyed working on it this summer. Can't wait to take the grand-kids up this fall for "work parties." Since they are 7, 4 and 2 years of age....I don't know how much work we'll get done....but we'll have fun! Old Old Buddy.
