I made a trip up to the cabin early this afternoon. I have been waiting to get back up there, but with me working every day and the weather...it's kind of hard.
I knew the feeder was out of corn and went up today with full intentions of fixing the feeder so that the deer could not get to the impeller (or basically feed themselves). Old Buddy had the idea of taking the impeller mechanism off. drilling holes in the bottom of a metal bucket, turn it upside down, put the impeller mechanism back up inside the bucket and screw it all in place.
That would probably have worked except we forgot about a couple of things that needed to go "up inside" as well. To top it off, I cut my finger on a jagged piece of the metal bucket and bled like a "stuck hog."
Long story short......I put it back together without the bucket and screwed it into place. I put the 200# of corn in the hopper that we took up last week-end and filled her to the brim! Then I turned off the timer so now the deer can feed themselves by using their tongues on the impeller. They spin it out pretty good! By turning the timer off, it will make the corn last a lot longer.
I had a nice fire before I left to go off the hill. It was nice and quiet.
I love the solitude! Old Buddy has two Nursing exams tomorrow so he had to pass on this trip..

A great thread that I was just turned on to. Nice job on your project.
I wanted to find out which make and model of wildlife camera you have to capture the wildlife in your area? I am just starting to do some research in order to purchase one, and was hoping I could get some info from you.

It's a Wildgame Innovations camera that has been discontinued apparently. At least their website isn't showing it to be available anymore. It got mostly favorable reviews and it has taken some beautiful pictures.
I found this on ebay...it looks like it.

Well......with any luck...I'll be on the hill tomorrow with a couple of cardboard banana crates full of 10 "cut-up" pallets of hardwood to use for kindling.
I also need to check the deer feeder. I'm sure it's empty so I'll need to take about four 50# bags of whole corn to fill the drum. I haven't been there for two weeks tomorrow and I'M MISSING IT!
I might do a bit of shooting while I'm there as well. Old Buddy can't make it because he has an exam on Monday so I may have to take the MRS. with me. She asked,"Do I have to ride that four-wheeler thing?" I told her she didn't if she didn't mind walking to the top!
I'd like to get a nice fire going and kick back and relax a little. I miss the woods. Maybe I'll take a few photos while I'm there.

Just got back from the hill. My wife called me and told me "the kids" were in so I waited until dark to see if any wildlife came around but no luck.
The feeder had about two hands full of corn left so I got there just short of too late! I Filled the feeder up and moved the camera to get a different angle of the deer/raccoons/turkeys moving about.
It was 41 degrees in the cabin when I got there and within about 30 minutes it was 82 degrees! I opened a window and "backed the damper down." It cooled off real nice so I sat and munched on peanut-butter filled pretzels and peach ice-tea. It wasn't a meal but it was tasty.
It took me two trips up the hill today. The first load was the four 50# bags of corn and the second trip was the two banana boxes filled with rough-cut (pallet) kindling stacked on end. There was probably close to 110-120 pounds total. That will make several fires for us.
I just enjoyed about four hours sitting and looking at the scenery. It was good....................

old old buddy ---you need a box of this long leaf southern pine "fat lightered" / rich pine for starting fires in the wood burner. It is amazing how it quick it starts a fire!!!!
i headed down to fill my feeder tomorrow as well. And check my camera---i have not been down since Monday---missing the woods as well. ( rained out today)
btw i have a friend who owns a pallet mill, those scrap pieces burn real good in the heater or open camp fire.

Have a good trip tomorrow. You're lucky to have your buddy with the saw mill.
I really enjoyed the day today....eventhough it was short. I just sit in an easy chair and take in the scenery.
Here within the next few weeks we need to cut down some trees for next winter. Our log pile is really getting low. We have plenty of kindling but we're short on logs. I can't believe how much wood we went through this winter with no insuation. We'll have plenty of locust for next winter, that's for sure.
We haven't seen the big boy on the camera since the 26th of January...a few days after muzzle-loader season. I moved the feeder and camera so maybe we'll get a look at him within the next week or so.

Well, Old Old Buddy and I went up to the cabin today for a nice relaxing afternoon. We got to watch a few gobblers...even had a nice fire going. The hardwood scraps sure smelled nice outside while they were burning. We got the feeder fixed and put some corn in it. Maybe next time we go up we'll get some trees cut down and start on this year's wood pile. I just acquired a Remington 700 Police in .300 Win Mag, so I'm anxious to do a little shooting.

Another nice day on the hilltop today. It did get a little chilly with a touch of snow flurries. Our goal today was to get to some wood cut and to clear our shooting lane for our 250 yard rifle range. I'm getting pretty excited over this range, I've got to be honest. I would like to have included some better daylight pics, but Old Old Buddy would not allow for any work breaks, hence the pictures were taken at dusk.
Here's our new woodpile.
This is a view of our "shooting lane" on the cabin side. To the other side is right at 250 yards. Id like to put up an IPSC full size AR500 3/8" thick steel target. We got the cabin side clear. The target side will require a little clearing to get it where we want it. The shots should echo pretty good being that the shots are going across a valley.
Here's my fix on the feeder. The deer were accessing our corn at will with their tongues. A little dexterity on their part and they could turn the impeller at will whenever. In the rut, we were going through 200lbs in a week. The bucket serves as a shield so they can't do that anymore and it serves as a dinner bell as well. lol The sound of that corn hitting that galvanized bucket is pretty loud. I'm not even going to comment about the wooden leg on the feeder...I'll leave that up to Old Old Buddy. lol

If I am not mistaken, your pictures will come back. Usually, websites limit the amount of band width you can use per month. If you exceed that amount, they shut you down until a new month begins, then your bandwith limit starts over. Your "aniversary date" might be the date you signed up for photobucket.

I reduced the number of photos on my account from 521 to 197. still no luck yet. My join date is 2-6-09. Apparently my views showed a real spike in activity this week. I can't even use any of the pics for anything right now...it's like the account is locked. I don't know...photobucket doesn't exactly have a customer service guy to help me out.

Thanks Tim. We're heading up there tomorrow. It's supposed to be beautiful tomorrow, so time will tell. Im taking my 2 1/2 year old with me so he can get some more of the "cabin experience". So far he has really enjoyed all his trips up there with me and "Pap" (Old Old Buddy). On a sour note, Old Old Buddy's computer has got a virus so he won't be posting for a little while. I did take a few pics of our long range "sticks". Once we get our targets set up and my rifle sighted in, it'll be a shooting competition between Old Old Buddy and myself every time we shoot...with bragging rights to the winner. My Dad and me have always been pretty competitive...whether it was with muscle cars, crotch rockets, shooting rifles/pistols, or lifting weights...well the last category isn't much competition for me. lol Seriously though, it's all in good fun.
My rifle which is in the foreground is a Remington 700 Police in .300 Winchester Magnum, it has a Leupold Tactical Vari-X III scope. Old Old Buddy shoots the Savage 10 FCP in .308 Winchester. It also has a Leupold Tactical Vari-X III scope.
Both rifles have HS Precision stocks. His barrel is 24", mine is 26".
Identical scopes, except mine has a mil-dot reticle. His has the duplex...mine is missing the rear scope cap. lol
These rifles are a lot of fun. His outweighs mine by about 1 1/2-2 lbs.
Theses are pretty big cartridges. A .300 win mag is basically a .375 H&H necked down to .30 caliber...lots of powder that's for sure. Old Old Buddy has already remarked he is NOT looking forward to shooting my rifle.
If any of you sharp eyed members noticed that Old Old Buddy's rifle has a left handed stock pack, you'd be correct...that's because he's a lefty...but the gun is for a righty...I know it looks funny, but he went with a right handed rifle because they're are a lot easier to sell than lefties.

Well, Old Old Buddy, my son, and I were on the hill today for a little visit. OOB went around the edges of the steel roof with expandable foam...hoping to keep out the bugs...mainly Wasps. We're in our pre-planning stage of the porch. My two locust posts have dried out nicely (for the endposts) and we stripped off the bark to let them dry out a little more. It's looking like it's going to be a 12' x 7 1/2' porch. Hopefully construction will start sooner rather than later. The post hole work is a real bear. It requires more spudbar digging than anything due to all the rock in the ground. I can't wait to get the porch built, get the remaining two windows in, put on the battens, and get it painted.

I forgot to show these last time. It's looking at the cabin from where the target will be...right at 250 yards.
With the camera on zoom, that's Old Old Buddy standing there. If he took a few steps forward, I believe that's close to where our shooting bench will be.
Old Old Buddy and his grandson "Big Red" as we call him. It looks like PB&J and grapes for lunch. lol

"Big Red" is certainly adorable!!! He's the same age as our granddaughter Morgan who loves coming to our cabin and eating peanut butter and jelly and grapes too

Trollbridge She's doing pretty good for getting sick at least once every day...same for the last birth, all the way until delivery. She was not looking forward to another pregnancy, but we persevered. She knows it's worth it, but WILL NOT have another one. lol She always wanted two boys because she came from a family of three girls, (I still feel sorry for her Dad) but now she has changed her mind because she already is thinking Big Red and I will always be in the woods, leaving her at home by herself (which we wouldn't as long as she puts in her "work-time" at the cabin lol)...so she wants a little princess to doll up. I don't care either way as long as it's healthy. But now that I think about it, two boys might be easier to raise come dating time. I was a very protective brother for my younger sister...so I hate to think what I'd be like for a little girl come dating time. I told Old Old Buddy the other day we have to start posting some progress pics...especially of the porch here in a little while. Btw, one of my good friends seen this 7 page thread and wanted to know why my Dad isn't called "Real Old Buddy"? lol
So, how's your place coming?

Well, either boy or girl as long as they are healthy that is all that really matters! Will you find out by ultrasound or wait to be surprised? Maybe there is one of each in there.......sorry to scare you but stranger things have happened...I had identical triplets totally out of the blue! Yikes! Well, hopefully her sickness passes soon....when is the baby due?
Have you started on your porch? Your going to really like having a protected place from the rain...make it as big as you can possibly go...you won't ever regret it!
We haven't been able to get to our place for the past 3 weekends so I'm going a little crazy! This woman needs her cabin time!!!! Next weekend we are going but I don't think we will be doing much work cause we will have older kids visiting the cabin and they want to do "fun stuff". Isn't working fun???? I don't mind working and feeling like I accomplished something! Oh well!
I look forward to seeing pictures of your porch in progress...you'll have to put "Big Red" to work....I'm sure he would love to be your Lil helper!!!

We're going to find out by sonogram. The baby is due Sept 22, just three days after mine...it would be pretty neat to share a birthday. Don't say twins or triplets!!! Blashphemy! lol It is what it is...at \least I will be graduated from nursing school in July on Friday the 13th. So, A LOT of the stress in my life now will be gone by then. We can't go no bigger on the porch because OOB bought just enough steel to cover a porch of that size. It'll be nice. We'll have wood stacked on one end, with a couple of wooden rocking chairs on it. We have to get some gravel around it when we finish, it's prone to becoming real muddy after the rain. My mother says she'll come up more often when we get the porch finished, so we'll probably try to get it done a little quicker. lol
