We're about 80% complete on a 12x16 cabin in Tx Hill Country. We're off grid (solar) and plan to stay that way. Was wondering if anyone had any good or bad experiences with either composting or incinerating toilets. Incinerating would have to be propane. We do have water available (rainwater and/ or river water). Thanks!

I have a Biolet at our camp. We have the electric one that has a small fan inside, but I'm told that the non electric ones are still pretty good.

If I went with the non electric one, I'd also order the pipe stack wind deflector. It helps keep a vacuum flow of air going up & out of the pipe.

I went a new route entirely. I made a humaure toilet but I have no interest in composting my own waste - or dealing with it. So I line the bucket with two plastic garbage sacks and dump about two cups of kitty litter in the bottom - not the cheap stuff the clumping stuff. We add a little more when we need to cover "stuff". When it's full we tie the garbage sacks and pull it on out and throw it away. (We use a Lowe's bucket for transport) Kitty litter gives a nice scent - no stink (not even in the heat of summer)- no worries of raw sewage spilling anywhere. Works perfect for us!

Wow, at those prices I could only see making that purchase for purely "green" reasons.

Where did they get that homeowner guy? He is kinda scary...

Agreed, you can dig a pret-tee big hole for a couple thousand bucks. Even the non-electric is $1000. And still, yuk.

If I had to go non septic I would use a sun-mar type of system, where the composting barrel is in its own space and not in the bathroom.

With these you can use a low flush regular toilet.

If you have electricity you can get one that will pump the waste to a composting barrel in a garage or different building if you want.
