hello all,
last winter i used a big buddy non vented propane heater, but i am nervous to use it this winter due to the excellent information on CO issues. i would eventually like to get a vented propane heated but for now, my plan is to knock off the chill with the big buddy and run a portable electric heater off generator for sleep time to maintain temp established. cabin is 12x28 (336 ft2) and insulated walls and ceilings in upstate sc (not terribly cold).
does anyone have a recommendation for:
1) particular model electric heater
2) type that would work best ie convection, ceramic, oil filled etc
3) wattage needed - i have 2 gennys 5000W and 2000W inverter

Have you looked in the Enenpure quartz heaters? I don;t know much about them but think they have a 100w and 1500w models maybe more?

I am heating insulated 300 sq ft with a 1500 watt infrared called Dr. Heater, it works great and keeping a good temp so far, maintaining 65 degrees with it set on auto at 68. Only cost $200 with shipping from walmarts site. One night last week it went down to about 25 outside and I did notice it getting a little cooler inside, but not bad, maybe 60 inside. It may struggle to keep 60 inside if it goes below 20 outside. The manual with it says it will eat 1.25 kw per hour set on high, I came up with about $135 a month if I leave it on 24 hours everyday. Only had it 2 weeks now and have not gotten a new elec bill yet so not totally sure.

This may not be exactly the topic, but for spot comfort I had any number of newer type electric heaters. Watts is watts as the saying goes and generally most small 110 heaters don't do a whole lot to heat a room for instance. But I had been given years ago an antique reflector bowl shaped heater on a stand that you aim at where your sitting. For 600 watts nothing will beat it. Your warm at half the cost. How much it does for a room I don't know, but if your trying to conserve electric an only need comfort for your newspaper reading or other project they come in quite handy. Other than antique shops which for some reason they are rather scarce at lately, ebay has a number of the earlier ones but the prices for them has jumped in the past few years as well. The earlier ones have more of a 30's look with cast iron bases and wood rear handles generally. I also picked up a GE but it turned out to be 1,000 watts and although the heat was fine I ran it less.

If it's just for sleeping then consider getting an electric bed warming pad, like an electric blanket except you sleep on top of it. They don't draw much power so you can run it off a battery and keep the generator off overnight.
