I put my foundation on the best possible area that would not need trees removed. I also wanted it by the electric pole (see right of picture), so I can run electric. Now someone said that I would not get a permit since the line would run over my cabin. I am not sure if they knew what they are talking about, because I got the permit.
I thought they wouldn't give me a permit if it was a problem. Any thoughts?

hard to tell from the pic , but it sort of looks like the line runs parallel to the cabin foundation, not over top of it.

At any rate, if they gave you the permit, I think its safe to say you can proceed. My cabin is also parallel to a power easement. The cabin itself is a mere 40 ft form the easement. I dont think its an issue. I dont require permits where im building but ive had an electrician, and county survey agent out on several occasions and nothing was said of it.

Your power company can tell you what they require for clearances, but worst case, you'd just have to locate the breaker panel on the same side as the power feed. If that's your drop point, you could put a panel on the pole and go underground from there.

Thank you for responding. I will be checking on this issue. I want to build in that location, so I will be contacting the power company to see if I am ok. If not, what it would take to move the line under ground. I am also calling Allegany permit office to confirm that they sent someone out and saw the situation before they approved my permit. I will let you know the outcome. Thanks again.

I see that orientation in urban areas everywhere.

Cabingirl: I had commented under a different thread where you had posed the same question--

There is a potential health risk from the electromagnetic field associated with the presence of the power line. Since you are only in proximity to a distribution line and not a transmission line the effect may be reduced and, thus, you were able to obtain the permit.

Yes the power company should give you engineering requirement drawings. In my case they came out and met with me to discuss what is required also. Here underground was a trench 2 feet deep and the cable in conduit. But I am sure its different everywhere. Then when the final connect they came out again to inspect.

Thank you to all that responded. I now have enough information to get started. I will be calling the power company to get things straight. I will let all of you know what happens.
