I got another half roll left over too - I think that makes a full roll :-)
And some plywood, 2x's, plumbing and electrical, I even pulled some cabinets out of a job. Heck, I bet we could put together a cabin with our leftovers, y'know what I mean fellas?

SSSHHHHHH...none of us has had any of those problems here ;-)

As the great Bluesman Albert Collins used to sing -
" I don't care what the people are thinkin', I ain't drunk, I'm just drinkin' "

This'll bring a smile to your face if you've never heard it:

The thing I appreciate about this site, is how our "cabin community" self regulates itself to maintain the philosophy that our cabin dreams are our own, whatever that may look like.
It is not too often that you see folks being judgemental on this site, and when folks do disagree, the language used is solution-focused...people don't get attacked for the way they think, believe or choose to construct their cabins, sheds, bunkies...whatever your cabin means to you. Not every site is like this one...and there will always be an "anonymous" who pops in to pay a visit...thank goodness the positive vibes from the rest of the real cabin dwellers makes it uncomfortable for those folks to stay around.
Cheers...I'm going to play with my new cabin toy christmas present my wife bought me...a little old used 250 yamaha moto quad...bless her heart!

Weren't we looking for a communal place for a 1st forum "gathering in-the-flesh-meet-and-greet" recently?

Just thinking out loud here...

Ma'am,

You don't really know how far the rabbit hole goes. Come on. Create a pay pay account if nothing more than an experiment. It'll be fun for everyone. Pride is also appropriate when you consider the number of friends you have. Let us help.

Erin #1... I'm not sure where Bevis wants to build in Tenn. but he lives in Florida. The land his old cabin was on he has sold and he will be building on skids(so that it can be moved if need be) because a hunting club owns the land.

I am NOT a carpenter what so ever, But I can do a Mean Hammer,
I did both-I almost 69 years old,--I bought a small kit From Lowes 8'x 10' to learn from, and did a rent to buy a 10'x16' so I can see the differences-YES the KIT actually cost more since I had to beef it up-I didn't want chip board floor,I added more floor studs,Roofing materials & metal trim NOT included,BUT I did learn a lot,I feel very confident NOW I can do a larger unit.

Erin, I'd be in for a "Benji" too. Too far away for me to drive and help with the cabin raising, so maybe I can toss in a hunskie.

I looked at kits, hell, I looked at so many options it is unreal. I finally drew my own plans, based upon some I ordered from a site off of here.. heh.

The finished product will be a custom design, open space 1 large room cabin. It will be 24x32 with a 15x32 front porch, covered etc. It will have an attached 7.5x7.5 bathroom. The roof will be solar barrier with metal Max-Rib roofing.

I am going to do rainwater collection.. oh.. and there will be a 24x8ft loft as well.

I am planning about a 5/12 slope roof on the main house and a 2/12 slope on the porch.

I have all the materials (I think.. lol) ordered and they should be delivered in the next week or two so we can start. Cost, about 8k.

That does not include the insulation or finish on the interior walls.

I have a 1950 Chambers stove to run off propane when it is done and plan to get free or cheap cabinets off the internet.

Having a big cabin raising first week in April, so anyone around Texas, come on down ;)

I'll be starting a project thread as soon as the parts are delivered.

Where at in TX? If we are close, I wouldn't mind helping out for a bit.

TX is a BIG state...

I agree that kits are the best when you don't have a lot of time. I just put the shell up of my 28x38, with an attached 14x22 garage this summer using a kit. It took me 2 days for the foundation/floor working by myself, about 6 hours for all the walls with some help and a few days for the roof. If I were to have stick framed it all myself it would have taken easily 3 times as long. It cost me $19K, but that included everything from the walls, floor joists to the shingles and siding.

ErinsMom, where in TN are you? I'm from TN but moved to KY several years ago. We'd be glad to come and do as much as to "about over the hill" folks could. My hubby has been building most of his 60+years.

I in the late seventies decided to built a cabin on a piece of land I had acquired in Okanagan. I live in Calgary and was driving on the on the McLeod Trail and I noticed a Log Cabin sitting on the parking lot of Woolco Department store. I went inside to look at it and I really liked it
but the kit price was little bit too much for me, little over $50,000.00.
I asked the sales person if I could buy a blue print of the cabin and he sold me for $2.00. I had some knowledge of building material because I had finished my basement. I sat down to convert the log cabin into a 2X4 structure and than fire my blue print to Vernon for a permit. With very minor changes I was issued the permit So I now have a cabin for last 34 years still standing as strong as ever. I had quite a bit of help from my young neighbor (23 years old and his wife) who had a construction company.
