hello everyone , long time browser/lurker and couldnt really find an answer to my question .
we are plaining on a rain water collection setup with an underground tank so no light will get into the tank , so no worries about algea . but my biggest question is how long can water be good for ? i know it may sound like a silly question but we would only be using this cabin a few times a year to start , but over the course of several years we would slowly be going to it more and more . while a well would be of our best interest , other around the area are getting water at 250-300ft , and right now a deep well is not in our budget . we figure we can put in a tank for less than 1500.00 doing the excavating work ourselfs .
we would only be using the water for showers and toilet , we tend to make alot of tea and other canned beverages {beer} haha...
the thing that worries me is just the water sitting stagnant for a long time while we are not there . but without light i think it might be ok?
so any worries on long term water holding ?

If you add some chlorine bleach to the water occasionally it should be fine almost indefinitely. I'm sure you can google instructions on how to purify water with bleach and come up with some appropriate proportions.

i was thinking just some bleach might be ok since we are just going to use it for the toilet and shower ...... im still reading alot .... only really gave the rain water a thought the past week or so ... was originally just going to hual in water ...

We haul in our water in a 325 gallon farm type tank. I just posted pictures of the tank/trailer hauler in the general forum in answer to a question listed Advice/Ideas.
You may want to make sure that the tank you choose is OK to bury.None of the ones I've seen available from the farm supply stores are OK to bury. ( they actually have a sticker on the tank that says not to bury them)
Since ours is in direct sunlight most of the time, we do have to deal with algae sometimes. As bzzzzzt stated, cheap non scented bleach will take care of this.

For about 10 to 15 bucks you can buy this pool chemical treatment at Wal Mart. 5lbs. treats 128,000 gallons of water.
I used to work for a city sewer/water management firm and we used the same chemical to shock treat the city's underground water wells. It kills all harmful bacteria and disinfects the underground water pipes.

darz5150 thanks for the link going to give it a good read ..... as for hualing in water its not going to be that easy , the trailer and tank would be no problem , but getting the water would be some what of a challenge . like i said there are people around that have wells , but i dont like to be dependant on others and this is also in wyoming so water rights are very strict ... i live in PA so hualing water out all the time over a 2000 mile drive wont be easy ...

You will not likely have any problem. I have been useing rainwater exclusively for over a decade. My storage capacity in total is north of 5000 Canadian gallons Keep it underground, cool,out of the light, and you will not have any trouble. I made a simple prefilter out of window sheer material just to keep leaves,dirt from getting into the tank. I would never go back to well water again. Pure soft rainwater cant be beat

We haul in 5 gallons containers of "city" water for drinking and dishes, and use filtered rainwater for showering. I have added chlorine to the rainwater just for added safety, but the wife doesn't like the smell (there is also a thread concerning hydrogen peroxide hereabouts).
We keep a cart by the driveway to haul the water and heavier weekend baggage.

You should check on GOOGLE and just type "RAM PUMPS". You will find information about this amazing pump! If you have a spring around your camp you have to check this out! (RAM PUMPS) I did set up a water system like that and it is working perfect. It would take to much space for me to try to explain how it works but once you visited this "site" (RAM PUMPS) on GOOGLE you can send me an e-mail so i can explain more about it. I'll even send some pictures. I'm not to familiar with this and do not know how to send pictures on this site but with my e-mail i have no problems. I am just about ready to make a video on my system. As soon that i'll have it done i will be on U-TUBE. I'll keep you guys posted!
