This is a circa 1812 cabin that's the inspiration for the one I want to build this summer on our land. Our area was originally settled by Loyalist settlers, in fact a neighbor down the road restored a cabin just like this on his property, and this year marks the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812 so that makes it extra special.

What's interesting is that these log cabins were built as temporary shelters until the main house could be put up, which mirrors our own situation [except we'll also have 1976 travel trailer on site during construction :)]

Typically they were sized similar to a typical English cottage, with interior dimensions of 16' by 15', I'm thinking of making mine 16' square. I'll be using Stoney's lumber-log construction technique to give it that log home look, and I'll try to stain the exterior to give it that dark, weathered look. I'd prefer a metal roof, but wood shingles would be more authentic.

Of course, it won't be a cabin but an "accessory" shed, which my rural (ONT) zoning allows for.

That's exactly the type of cabin that I find so appealing. Simple, graceful, durable, and authentic. Keep us posted on the progress.
