I have a second cabin project in the works and I have been arm wrestling with the state DEQ over a septic system. Its a small lot and the field rep said probably only the drip aerobic would be approved. Has anyone here had any experience with that type of system, and whats the good and the bad. (other than the expense)

Another more detailed explanation of the system you mentioned. Sounds here like it may be a normal septic with an additional chamber where forced air is sent in to help create bacteria to break things down. With that explanation it sounds like it would be more expensive to set up, but not any more troublesome afterward

We have a similar system that was dictated to us as we were too close to the creek -- it uses a pump which runs 24/7 --frequent replacement ot the pump and additional power costs -- if you need to install it to pass code do it -- but when the pump burns out just let it be and treat it as a regular septic -- unless the county does regular inspections

Can you possibly use a composting system using a indoor "sawdust" type potty at least in cold weather. I went to that after my antique septic system became unusable. After reading the Human Manure book I found that its not considered by most locals as a septic system thus not regulated and shouldn't be an issue if handled properly. I have had mine a year and a half now an its quite easy to empty and maintain. I built a simple composting bin out behind the garage and always cover the new additions with mulch. It has absolutely no odor and after it sits for another season it will be disposable in the field or flower beds just like dirt. It can be used in vegetable gardens if your so inclined and have insured that it has heated to the proper temperatures and time to be used safely.
