Hi there,

First off, my congrats to everyone out there that made the big step from the rat race to building a little retreat in no mans land.

I built my place in 1999. it's a good size I find, 24x16 with 18 feet to the peak. I have a loft bedroom overlooking the living room, a hand pump for water, a wood stove for heat, a propane stove for cooking, and a manual flush toilet (just a normal toilet that I dump a bucket of water down to flush.)

It's insulated and I have done the test and spent a year in it. Aside from a few issues with laundry and food storage, I had a great time.

I have a balcony I made out of logs and a 10 by 24 foot deck. I sided it with some type of glazed abitibi siding I bought at a discount lumber store. Great stuff, hard to nail through though, but it weathers great and it's good to work with.

...

Once again congrats to all of you that made the big step backwards. :-)

Your cabin sounds very similar to mine, except for the foundation. Mine is built on cedar logs and floats on a lake. I have the hand pump, wood stove and propane stove, plus a small propane refrigerator. That helps with food storage, especially fresh items. Because it is water access only it is fairly private, especially in the fall, winter and spring. Most of the nearby cabins are summer use only. Moving away from hectic city life has been the best thing for me. I love being close to nature and growing some of my own food. This forum is a great place to share ideas.

drmargy, good to hear youre still kicking around. I'm getting tired of the snow, so we're heading on a carribean cruise next month. Can't wait to get back though, so I can get back to work on the cabin.
