Just a thought, but there are burners available as parts in many different sizes, many different sized threads where it attaches to the container. maybe you can find a burner that you can fit to a large container like a gallon fuel can? Just a crazy thought.... might not be too high on the good looking side of things.....

try a flea market, get an antique or vintage one, the new ones are either high priced, or junk (never meant to be used). i got my best lamps at a flea market and even with a small tank i only need to fill it once a week. well made lamps are efficent.

I found great oil lamps at Kmart! They're called farmer's lamps, all glass, about a foot tall, and only $7.99 each! A pack of 3 wide replacement wicks for them is just $1.99! Very attractive and they throw off a good amount of light. I bought 3 and am planning to return for a few more.

Really can't beat the price.

W. T. Kirkman has the best selection I have found. I have two of their 350 Little Giant lanterns that have a 31 oz. capacity and 40+ hour burn time.

One thing I ran across the other day that I didn't know is that the mantles on mantle type lanterns, both oil and white gas (Coleman) are made using radioactive thorium. There is not much, but in the article I read on Mother Earth News they suggest that when you light a new mantle do so outside and avoid breathing the ash. Doesn't apply to lanterns that have only a wick and not a mantle.

Hi Cabingal!

Sorry for disappearing like I did! I've been in medical hell and am now recovering from surgery number 2, grrrr. Not fast enough, I need to get going on my house sale and move!!!! Didn't want to whine at you all! But now I'm back and you're stuck with my silly questions again!

These really are nice lamps. Very attractive, do a good job of illumination and don't guzzle oil. Excellent price. I like them because they don't take up too much space but they're big enough to make a difference!

Aladdin mantle lamp

A few years ago I bought an Aladdin lamp online, and found another at a flea market. It's easy to buy parts and they're beautiful. That being said it's really neat to walk into our place at night & just light up a Coleman lantern.
Really still love the old hurricane lamps, too.

Oh-h-h-h-h-o, oil lamps.....or lanterns.

Whenever I see the red lanterns in the stores, I'm like a 240 lb moth.
My childlike mind immediately travels back to visions of times when men signaled locomotive engineers, or trudged out to the barn in the middle of a wintery night to help deliver a calf.

Last time I bought one, I nearly blew us to smithereens.
Dang thing leaked all over and couldn't seem to hold the wick in a good place.
Me? I kept lightin' matches (another fascination of mine).

The thing looked like the real McCoy, but it was more of a decoration than something for actual useful illumination, with the exception of a brief explosion.
Kmart I think it was.

Deitz, aey? I see where they, too, are made in China...but quality seems OK according to reviews.
I'll give 'em another try.

I got matches.
