i'm looking for suggestions on a stair design and location to maximize space in my soon to be 14' X 24' cabin with a 14'X16' loft.
any ideas?

I did a ships ladder and am very happy with it - it takes up very little space and is easy to use. My cabin is 12 by 12. You can google ships ladder for plans, and there is probably good info on this site. You could also see my ladder at http://catskillcabin.blogspot.com/ - scroll towards the bottom.

Been toying where to put mine as well when I build....I came up with putting it in the kitchen end area of the cabin against the outside wall, then using the underneath for a pantry. Possibly will use 2 outside walls and make it "L" shaped with a short stair with landing then turn and up to the loft., that will open up more space in the kitchen as the "up" stairwell will be shorter.

I have an idea for stairs.. I haven't seen it anywhere and I haven't built mine yet so I cant say if it works. I will try and attach my wondeful drawing 
The benefit of this design is that you can put it almost verticle and it should in theory be easier to climb then a ladder that is at the same angle. Might have to play around a bit with it. Just a suggestion.
The drawing on the left is if you were looking at it to climb up the stairs and the one on the right is just to give an idea of the angle.

the 'L' shape staircase has been the one we are most focused on at this point(in the kitchen area also.) i saw another one that intrigued me where the staircase started by taking the first few steps towards an outside wall and then a landing and an about face going back up towards the middle of the room and entering the loft from the 'open' end of the loft. i am sure you could do this entering the middle of the loft if you wanted to.

looks like a version of a jefferson stair or alternate tread design. i really like the concept of that design but my buddies arent thrilled with it and i wonder if my 68 year old dad and father-in-law(along with my ability in years to come) would be easy enough to traverse.

muth, I thought of the open end of the loft as well using the landing idea, but I came to the conclusion that I want the "open" area through the cabin unobstructed, as the cabin will be small to start with. But I like the twist stairs/landing idea a lot as well..
