So I think I'm going to use concrete piers (sonotubes) for my 1 1/2 story cottage. They're going to be 5' under the ground (or less if I hit bedrock), about 1' or 2' above the ground.
I'm really on the fence about whether to run the concrete all the way to the building, or use PT 8x8 posts. Running them all the way is my preference, but I'm not sure the best way to attach the building to the posts if I do this. Could anyone recommend ways to do this, or a strongtie fastener for this application? The base will be 2 2x12 boards.

Hi Bobbotron,
I used concrete piers (sonotubes) for my cabin base. Here is the procedure I used.
Right after you pour the concrete to the desired height in the sonotube, you insert a Anchor Bolt (L shaped) while the concrete sets, keeping it upright and at the correct height. Then drill holes at the right locations in your beams (I used PT 6x6) and bolt these down on to your piers. Then build your floor joists on top of the beams.
If you want to use wooden posts instead, make your sonotubes flush with the ground level, and insert Post Connectors. I did this with my deck at the front of the cabin.

I did pretty much the same thing as 'outdoorguy' but used Simpson brackets to attach to my 4x6 beam.

Hello, if you have the choice I would go with the sonotube/beam connection rather then the sonotube/post/beam set up. I think the first option produces a stronger foundation. On my cabin I ended up having to use posts to level the floor up as I had a bad concrete pour. My floor is sturdy but I think the sonotube/beam setup would be better. you can see photo's of my set up at my thread under "My build in Nova Scotia".
