Hey All,
My wife and I just purchased this teeny 1994 Airstream B 190.
We are planning on selling our farm in the next 6-10 months. We are going to hit the road for a year before we buy a home in Idaho south of our cabin. We are big live music fans, and are going to travel to indulge ourselves in music for a year. I can work from anywhere so we really can pull this off. We are excited as can be about not having a mortgage, insurance, interest, utility bills, and all the other crap that goes with home-ownership, for a year.
I know it isn't a cabin, but it is SMALL, so I thought I would share.
It has A/C, furnace, unused oven/stove, 3way Dometic fridge, 20 gal white, grey& black tanks, queen sized bed, shore power, water hookup, Onan generator, AC/DC charging system, crapper, shower, water heater, water pump. and more. And it ALL works awesome.
It is a 1 ton Ford E350 conversion with a 460 in it.
We are going to hit a few festivals this year yet to practice.

Sounds like a great time..we were just looking yesterday at motor coaches! We plan to be 6 months north at the cabin and 6 months south in the warmth....Have a great time!

It sounds like you have a great year ahead of you. The camper is perfect!!! If you are able to, keep us posted on your adventures. Sounds like lots and lots of fun!!!

Yes on the peace sticker !!
Have to be in small southern towns cause that is the only place it is remotely warm in the winter.
We dig a lot of jam bands, old and new. We are both longtime deadheads. Lots of blues, bluegrass, roots. Really into a lot of the New Orleans staples. You name it. No hip hop, no death metal.
We have to sell our farm first, and our daughter has one more year of high school so we are a ways off, but we currently go see everyone in the region that we can. Our drop everything and go radius is about 400 miles at the moment. Now we can go everywhere.
TH, yeah, gas pumps will be the worst. They say 10-12mpg. We would be towing our bike and other supplies in a 12ft trailer so 10 is probably optimistic, even.
It may sound nutty, but we are at an age where we can actually handle doing this. We are not gong to wait until we are truly retired to start, and then tip over at 67 years old. Has been happening around us a lot recently. Too much to not think about it.
You only go around once.

My wife, 5 yr old and I have been doing the RV life for the past couple of years and love it! Another year or two and we are going to start our build as well.
It is a great life! You are going to have an incredible time!
Congrats to you on getting out there now while you can enjoy it!

We've been making plans to go south in the winter with a trailer when we retire. We tossed around all the different types of rvs and decided the most economical was pulling a light trailer with a f150. I like being able to disconnect from the trailer and go sightseeing. We won't have to put everything away before going somewhere. If the truck broke down and needed repairs we would have a place to stay. The bed of our truck has lots of extra storage for the zodiac and outboard etc. Think about getting some solar panels to run small appliances, pump and lights while boondocking. I think you will be surprised at how expensive it is to spend time on the road. Fuel,campground fees and maintance will eat up quite a bit of change. Check out www.freecampgrounds.com/

Been rving round the country for years. Nice set up but be aware that most rv parks don't allow van campers.

I do not understand that. Do they mean camping in vans? Or do they include Class B actual RV's too ?
Silverwaterlady, yeah we have come across one instance already where it is as much as a hotel room.....

Class B camper vans are not allowed in some state,county, campgrounds and rv parks.

sound like an even trade. now you have high fuel cost, insurance and repairs , not to mention maintenance. it seems no matter how hard we try we just trade one expence for another

My family and I (wife + 3 teenagers) traveled around for a year in a 29' Class C towing a Jeep. Tremendous experience. If you take out the fixed expenses (property taxes, minor utilities, health insurance, etc), we found that being on the road didn't cost a lot more than staying at home. That means that (for us) being on the road would have been MUCH less if we were homeless. Yes, commercial campgrounds can be expensive (and most charge extra for kids) but our national parks are real treasures and not that expensive (though it's hard not to look at it as we had to defray the costs for those over 62 who get a 50% discount on camping - great deal if you qualify). If you take your time traveling around the country you won't travel all that far in any given week (i.e., not that much gas expense) and enjoy nature and other freebies instead of tourist traps you may find you spend considerably less than you're thinking. Good luck and have fun. BTW, the only place we ran into in our ~year on the road where you may have a problem with your rig is very upscale snobby parks (sorry, my opinion only) that are "Class A only". And you won't be allowed in "tent" sections of parks without a tent so you may want to throw one in, even if you don't plan to sleep in it

Are you telling me you didn't have medical insurance for your family? That is shocking really since I work my butt off and have to pay for your "free as can be lifestyle" if you have a major medical emergency through my 30% tax rate.

We like to carefully choose a location that will allow us to stay from 2 weeks to a month. Staying a full month allows us to pay, in most cases, less than $13 a day for full hookups and amenities of the park.
We take day trips to all the areas surrounding the park and try to plan one day trip and one paid activity (water park, attraction, etc.) per week for the tater tot. It works out well for us.
Most of the parks we stay in have at least a couple of things such as a pool, fishing pond, playground for the kids, etc. so between going out a couple of times a week and the park, we always have something "new" to do and still manage to get some work done.
Using resources like RVParkReviews.com and calling ahead to make sure they have GOOD wifi, etc. will ensure in most cases that you get a nice park that you will really like. There are some real dogs out there.

TB, we are not. It is in getting new tires, shocks and a couple other minor things. We get back from Idaho Wed the 18th, and are headed right out Thursday for Rockford for a festival. Our maiden voyage !! Lots of bluegrass, funk, etc.
16 hours and counting.
