I was thinking the same thing. Darn varmints.

I wonder if Toyota brake cleaner would work on woodpeckers and skunks?

skunks don't just let it go, it takes a while for a skunk to recharge (up to several days), they keep it as a defense mechanism. within 10 feet range they can aim and hit a prescision target of a few inches. its an effective pepper spray weapon against predators and can cause blindness (hence ability to aim), after they use it they are vunerable to predation for a while, not a good choice to use your only defense cassually. they tend to beat the ground with their front feet as a warning and run if need be before spraying.

if they spray in your yard they may be fighting each other, a local cat, or larger predators, since they are noctournal you may not even know what they are fighting (owls don't care about the spray and grab up skunks, leaving no tracks and only the mid grab spray smell).

figure out what the skunks are in your yard for and remove that (those fat grubs eating the grass roots are a favorate food for skunk, as is unsecure trash). you can also live trap them, I do it all the time.
