Ive been thinking about giving a hand driven sand point well a try. How well do these things really work? my cabin is at the highest point of the lot but there are a few areas that might have ground water close to the surface very close to the building. The water will be used for showering/cleaning only. I have been bringing up water for 12 years and with a growing family the water tanks take up more room than the gear bags now. Soil is mostly sand and gravel just below the surface.

if you have sand and gravil you likely have water . i run two full time homes with sand points.. a high spot is often the best spot for a sand point.. ask your neighbours someone will know if there is water around and how deep it usualy is locally , good luck

They work very well. I put one in a year ago pounding a 1 1/4" dia. SS pipe 16' into fine sand--pretty easy. Bought a $35 pitcher pump and that's it. Be sure to use a sacrificial striker cap so as not to damage the threads. (PS I used stainless steel pipe because the water is a little on the acidic side where I am; pH ~5.5, but regular iron pipe will suffice if water has pH of 7)

Im confused trying to understand the water ,the high spot is best for water? On the south side of the camp the ground goes out flat for about 25-30 ft and drops off quickly to a seasonal stream (about 25 ft down) North side flat about the same and gently rolls down about 10ft and it rolls back up.Outhouse is to the east. I thought the best spot for a well would be near the stream or to the north side in the low spot. How does water seek a high spot?

Find out how deep the water is in your area first! If it is within 20' of the surface than pound it where it is convienient wheather high or low...How much higher is your high spot compared to your low spot??
