Very attractive woodstove installation.
Did you put sheet metal under the bricks?
If embers get between the bricks, can they contact wood?

Bldginsp . I intend to mortar the brick and install some trim around it, but until then we put a sheet of the same steel under the brick. Our biggest issue with this stove it the overheating problem with a small cabin!

Hey everyone
I hope you are all enjoying the spring weather. I have a new video about the system we use at our cabin to get the building materials from the lake to our site. I think is quite unique. Have a look.

Looking great! I love that you are taking time to enjoy it and are documenting it along the way.

I think you will love the southern exposure too! Did you make plans to use the solar gain for heat at all - or is this just a 3 season place?

Also how are you going to keep the water out in your doorways between the buildings?

Nice work! We are building by water too, though our project is a more modest undertaking. Good luck!

I'm enjoying the videos too. We are building north of Huntsville just west of Algonquin park. But being all thumbs we are hiring people to do the foundation and framing. But I plan (hope?) to do the inside finishing and exterior finishing, and plumbing. Here' s a photo.

Hey Hunterda

That looks like a nice site. How close to the lake are you? We had a 30m setback to deal with. Im just starting some inside finishing, I will post some video of that soon. Good luck with you project.

Just: thanks, we get a gorgeous view almost due west. Perfect for setting sun.

OntarioLakeside: we are also about 120 feet from the water's edge, with about 30 feet of elevation. I like the stairs you built. But I think we may have too much silt on top of the bedrock. Would need to put down footings. Maybe next year!

We decided to go with ISO board insulation, on the outside of the exterior walls and above the roof boards, and between two layers of plywood flooring. We hope to get a nice rustic, exposed framing woodsy look on the inside. Fingers crossed.

OntarioLakeside: love the bit with the chipmunk!

Did I see an on-demand hot water tank on the exterior wall? Ecotemp?

My kids want a zip line. What gauge wire did you use? And what is the crank device for tightening the line?

This weekend my youngest and I built a floating dock with used plastic barrels--some had contained soy sauce and some kosher cooking sherry!

Looking great. You guys seem to really enjoy the build process. Ours seemed so stressful comparatively.

How are you flashing the metal roof and what do you do against the walls - step flashing?

Hunter, thanks for the comments. the chipmunks have taken to coming in whenever the door is left open! Our water heater is an ecotemp, I posted a video on our water set up here.

I used 1/4" cable for the zip line. its rated for 1400lbs.

Our barge that we use to transport the materials across the bake is made with old barrels. Works great.

We are enjoying the process. I set a very reasonable time table and make a point of setting aside time for the kids. The company we bought the steel roofing from makes all the flashing in their factory. I sent them my rook design and they made it all. there is three main flashings, drip edge along all the lower edge above gutters. continues wall flashing in 10' sections with 12" of overlap. and the top flashing on the highest edge of the roof, it is about 12" over the roof and covers 8" over the edge.

The system also has a foam rubber gasket along all edges.

Hope that helps!!

Hey all

Now that its getting cooler we have been thinking about heat at the cottage.
I made a video about our new propane cook stove conversion and wood stove install.

Take care

Love it! We play a ton of games at the cabin too. How does it play when you take it off the wall? Are the edges rough? and how is the recessed board?

So where do you find time to complete these projects and edit the video? I admire it. With kids around I can't seem to complete anything.

Hey Cabin calls

It plays just fine in the frame, I sanded it enough to make handling it ok. As for finding the time, I stopped watching TV! Its still tough to find the time but possible.
Thanks for the kind comments

My son bought a drone. They are amazing machines. Check out these photos it makes the cabin look like a toy. I can't wait for the trees to leaf out.

A rundown of our simple solar setup. When you don't need refrigeration a small setup can work well.

If you have a chance to look at my video above, Im wondering about the 100watt panel charging those big batteries. is there any reason they won't top up over time? I figure I'm getting 5 amps from the panel 5 hours a day when Im not there.
