Hi All!,

Looking for advise here. Bought a little piece of land (5 acres) with a little cabin. Cabin sat unused for 7-8 yrs. Obvious signs of mice or squirrels inside. Need to clean it up and so some fixing up on the outside. My thoughts are to fix up outside first and replace any rotted wood, patch holes and a general once over. Inside, well..thinking of gutting and dropping some flea and tix bombs off and get rid of anything else in there. Any thoughts on how to attack this? I think some TLC can bring this place back to life and a place for the kids, wife and I to enjoy on warm summer nights. (no eletric, septic or water)

Ever hear of Hanta Virus? I may have misspelled it, but it is carried by rodents and spread by inhaling dust contaminated with dried rodent droppings. There was a large outbreak in Yellowstone Park this past Summer.

Anyway, before you go in and start sweeping and cleaning, mix up a clorox and water solution, spray down the inside, let it dry, and wear a mask while doing the work.

We also have no electric, water or septic, but manage to enjoy our cabin all year!

As mentioned above, cleaning would be a good start. Would want to block out the vermin, sealing up holes, setting traps, etc. Also look at anything that needs attention in order to keep it from becoming a bigger problem.

If you have a heat source, one could concentrate on the inside this time of year, then outside for warmer weather projects.

Make a list of everything you'd like to do inside & out, and note which ones need warm weather. Prioritize the list, check the forecast, and pack appropriately for the weekend!

Be sure and post your progress!

I agree with you, repair the outside to stop the rodents, than clean/repair the inside. If i were you I would spend the money and buy a good respirator for breathing while your doing the interior demo and cleaning. Don't get those cheap paper masks, there garbage and you will never get a good seal around your mouth with them. Don't take chances with your health from cleaning up from rodents, its not worth it in the long run.

Yuck-rodents

Anyways, welcome! Let the good times roll!

It will be fun to read about the progress you make cleaning up and repairing your cute little place. A little TLC and your family will have a wonderful place to make even more wonderful memories at!

I like it, no electricity and a TV! Ditto on what Martian and northernspirit said. When cleaning use good respiratory protection. I have a friend, who is still screwed up because of cleaning up mouse droppings without a respirator, and that was from 20 years ago. He got sick right after that, and has never completely got rid of it. You might be able to keep the vermin out by stuffing the holes you find with steel wool and back filling with expanding foam. The steel wool hurts their gums, so they don't chew it. Great potential in your cabin; I am sure you get many years pleasure from it once the problem areas are brought under control.

Yea exsailor! I thought the same thing..not one but two of them. Both were there when I bought the place. They have been removed since the pix was taken. Those big screens were great target practice for a .22. I will do some research on the virus. Sounds nasty. Thanks for the comments...appreciated.

Cool old cabin.

Stop the rodents, or at least make a significant reduction. Plug all the holes, and put poison @ traps inside, and stay away from the cabin for awhile. The exposure problem is far worse when the droppings, saliva, urine are fresh, so if you can let the droppings dry out it's safer for the cleanup project. Some areas you can paint over, or stain over, to encapsulate the dust.

Axe
That's a strange place to put the axe, but that's one less thing you have to buy.
Hantavirus. Once you have it, it's (almost) too late. Don't mess with 38% !!!
