My log cabin is made of chestnut and I'll likely have it cob blasted this spring to bring it back down to the bare wood. I could use some expert advise on the best stain/poly to use that will last. I think the Internet has become one big marketing ad so its really hard to get real information. Every product is 'best!'.. Thanks in advance!

I used permachink products. They have a 2 part system which is stain and then clear. Every couple years you just need to apply clear.
If you are cob blasting a couple things. 1) the wood is going to soak up a lot of stain, 2) it will be tough gettin the stain even unless you saturate the wood...that's what i did, and 3) the stain will likely be darker than advertised so get some samples.
Also you might as well apply a preservative like shell guard since the wood will be bare.
After cob blasting you will need to sand the logs. Look for an Osbourne brush and variable speed Makita sander. This setup works much better than sand paper.

You may also like to try Cabot stains sold at Lowes. I've done my awning in it and it looks great. When I build my cabin, Cabot's is what I will use. Remember, you get what you pay for.

The stains found in big box stores are generally not suitable for log cabins. The level of protection you get from the products designed for log cabins is pretty amazing.
Short story: after refinishing my cabin using permachink products I bought a picnic table for the deck. I stained the table with a quality stain from a big box store. After spilling the stain all over my deck, I also stained the deck  .
After 3 years, the table and deck were 1 year past due to be stained again. The logs on the cabin still looked brand new. After that lesson, I can't bring myself to use the crappy stains sold at big box stores anymore.

1) The logs were cleaned with Log Wash.
2) Stained with Lifeline Ultra-7 in Oak 332.
3) Two coats of clear top coating Lifeline Advance Satin.
