I am looking at making some rustic log furniture for the cabin including a bed frame. I have looked at the Logman X on line and other tenon cutters. Wondering if anybody has any opinions on what they like or use?

Rockler has them. I purchased the kit to put the pencil ends ont he logs. It uses a 1/2" router base. You insert the log and turn it. Sharpens it kinda line a pencil. Then you can buy the bits to drill the mating hole for the pencil tip. The bits are pricey. I got .75", 1", 1.5" and a 2" drill but. The sharpener does all sizes.

I use hand tools; they work fine. Shaving horse, drawknife, and chisel for the tennon. Auger bit for the hole. Often, you can find these tools for not much at an antique/junk shop. Just sharpen them up and you are off.

For a bed frame, I would prefer to make the base a little beefer. I would likely opt for some type of thru mortise to support the bed portion (Thru mortise pictured below on a beam. You can adapt this technique for a log). Again, you only need hand tools.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have emailed Logman X and called but they have not replied as of yet. I am in Ontario so I don't know if they deliver to Canada at all.

If you have a router already, you might be able to make a jig that replicates the logman X? Lee valley also has some tenon cutters, but are pretty expensive..

I've whittled them by hand/axe before, I imagine when you got good at that it'd go fairly quickly.

I haven't made any log furniture yet, but am going to make a bed this summer.

Although I like buying tools, sometimes things start costing too much! I plan to do most of my tenons with a drawknife. If that doesn't work as well as I want, then I might try making a Logman X type jig.

Alternatives to the Logman X include making your own jig.

OK, the one I bought from Rockler is like Logman X's that holds the router base. Mine is metal, has insert/jigs in it to do different sizes and wasnt that expensive. Its the bits that make the mating end that was spendy.
