Does anyone have experience installing 'standard metal roof flashing' for 6" chimney pipe through a metal roof?

I've read that some people install the cone directly below the tin on their roof, and others install the cone from underneath the roof deck*. (*what i mean by this, is that i've read they cut a hole in the roof to fit the cone through, while leaving the flat part of the flashing on the inside, and screw down into the flat part to secure it to the roof)

I currently have rubber boot I plan on securing over the flashing, but began to wonder if both the 'standard flashing' and 'rubber boot' could work in the same setup?

any examples or ideas would be great?

Also, is it better to install the wood stoves piping and flashing before installing the metal roof? (i assume it would be, but im not sure if there is some reason why people shouldnt.)

People do a lot of unnecessary and dumb things. This would be one of the more dumb ideas. If water gets past the rubber boot the metal underneath does zilch good. . Just becuz somebody has done it and put pictures on youtube or some website does not mean it was ever a good idea. The rubber or silicone boots that are made for this work when done the way the mfg recommends. Save your time and don't try to reinvent things when the boots work. Just follow directions and take care forming it to the roof panel. Easiest to install after the roofing is on, drill a hole from the bottom to mark the center or fire a round through the roof if you're accurate and in the boonies and then cut out.

If your chimney comes out close enough to the ridge, and you can tuck the upper edge of the flashing under the ridge cap, then it will work fine. But, if you are in the middle of the roof, use the rubber boot.

Use the metal flashing made for molding to the shape of the roof metal ridges. Its flexible for just this reason. Its sealed and screwed down. Then the drip collar just above it on the chimney itself. Rubber might be fine for small drain vent stacks.

They make special rubber boots for a chimney. They work really well.

Anyone got a link for purchasing these rubber boots? I need one large enough to fit 6" double-wall chimney pipe (about 8" outside diameter).

I don't think Home Depot or Lowes carries anything like this. I've been pretty disappointed with their fireplace/woodstove supplies.

Owen, places like Mutual Materials or any distributor of building supplies has them. But you wont find them at Lowed HD etc.

I did what martin said.I spotted the flashing up next to my ridge cap and the flashing just goes up under that.

use a metal flashing and seam it above the pipe if you want a permanent seal. the rubber boot is a compression seal and really isnt meant to be used without being screwed down to something solid under the panel. Maybe you can frame in a box using metal studs but i know nothing about material clearance involving framing and wood stoves. Most panel manufactures make boots to fit the profile of their panels somewhat or if the profile isnt too high you can use a standard one and bend it yourself. I know it sounds counterintuitive to say seam a metal roof but a proper done lap seal above a pipe is leak proof.

Yes, I have installed standard metal roof flashing for 6" pipes before. It's not too difficult, but there are a few things you need to know before you start. First, make sure you measure the pipe carefully so that the flashing will fit snugly around it. Secondly, use a new hip and ridge cap when installing the flashing; this will help to prevent leaks. Finally, apply a generous amount of silicone sealant around the joint where the pipe and flashing meet, to ensure a watertight seal.

I have ordered many chimney accessories online from Chimneychoice.ie, they have also many information do's and dont's guide.
