We signed the final papers last friday on our 10 acres of brush in southern Missouri. Now we just need to clear a bunch of small trees. thorns , etc .

Thanks Hattie !! Will do! We have a cool camping spot for now and over the next few years will put in a small cabin, like Rifrafs.
Its full of pines , oaks, and dogwoods. There is also a small spring on the hill.
We drove down early Friday morning and slept a couple hours in the car. When we woke up we saw about 20 wild turkeys.
We learned that next purchase will be a quality chain saw. Way too many trees to cut with axes or handsaws, even for just a path.
We plan to put in a few fruit trees and some blackberries so they will be producing by the time we move in.
The upper Jacks Fork river is nearby and it has a 1 fish-18" length limit on Smallmouths. I don't keep them anyways but its a great way to preserve the resource.

Thanks ! We hope to get to use it every 90 days or so since it's a 5 hour drive.
We have a 10 year plan and we are already ahead of schedule. A few pics soon.

We have a lot of work to do. But I think that we will the fun part. Clearing a road and open space for the cabin is 1st on the list.

Pines? You got pines?
There are very few pines where we are but quite a few cedars. Mostly hardwoods, though.

Yep, we have pines. They are about 1/4 of what's there. More on the high ground. Lots of small oaks, some cedars, and a few hickorys.
And rocks,,,and more rocks.

Oh yeah....rocks. Yes, we have plenty of those, too.
Have you seen all the rock fences yet? All over you see where folks take a few feet of wire fence and roll it up and place them all over the property filling them with rocks. We saw some a few weeks ago where once the ricks were so high they would place one end of a fence post in it and keep piling on the rocks until it was time for another fence post.
When one rock stack was done they would start another at the other end of the fence posts.
Interesting was to build a fence for sure.

We even have a small spring, some locals call it a seep spring,..more or less just a pool that never goes away.

Thanks Hattie. We are very happy with the land. We would like to dive right in and get everything done right away. But it is a process, and as money and time allows , it will get there.
Clearing is the biggest job right, just so we can get around. We want to get a nice blackberry patch started this summer. My folks have wild blackberries growing at the pond and we will bring in some of those plants. Grandpa and Grandma's patch, a good legacy. Fruit trees will be after that. A few apples and pears.

Congrats. I remember when I bought my 20 acres, standing in the middle thinking to myself, its all mine. Its a nice feeling. Mine is about a 5 hour drive also. I manage to get there no less than 3 times a year for about a week at a time. Usually spring is work (still fun like playing) and then camping with friends and family the rest.
I have always loved the oak trees. We have groves of them in my state, none where my cabin is. We have the Garry oak, also known as the western white oak or Oregon oak.

It is a nice feeling knowing,,,,"This is ours!" We have pines, oaks,cedars, and dogwoods.
We hope to make it down every 90 days or so. Maybe 3-5 days per trip. When we get it ready, we can camp there all week and be all set.
We have made a simple outhouse, working on a shower , and a good start on a fire ring.
This property , to us, is more than just a recreational spot. We plan to move there in about 10 years and semi retire. A small 380 sq ft cabin insulated really good with a big garden and small fruit orchard.

Our last trip was mostly hard work, clearing the jungle. We learned that late june is Not the time the clear brush in the ozarks. Too muggy, too many ticks, and there are a lot of trees to clear.
I think next time we visit, the bulldozer man will be there too. We were wanting some ground leveled, but it will be nice to have him push some of the trees as well.

It is a long drive, we wish it were closer but really love the area.
MJW- the ticks were awful. We worked in the woods and some came back to camp with us. UGH. Most were those tiny seed tick.
Tobit-we are real close to Texas county. We signed in March and have tinkered with our place some. Making paths, etc..
Our next project will be to bring in a small dozer to make a clearing, fancy up the road/ path, and maybe even make a small dam.
