I am new to this site and really like all the projects that I have seen so far. I am only 21 and in college but I started my first cabin and I love it. I just figured I would post a few pictures of the cabin so far and see where it goes! I have a limited budget so my methods on building might not quite be up to par. However, I like it and it works for me. There is still a lot more work to be done! The cabin sits on a small little peninsula with a creek winding around it. You can sort of tell in the pictures. This is before the site was cleared.

Since I didn't really have the help or money I decided not to go with an actual foundation. I ended up using cmu's with posts concreted in each corner. The building is 12x16 so I have cmu's as supports under each floor joist (My dad happened to have about 80 cmu's he wasn't using)

I had originally decided not to go with the posts in each corner but thought better of it. I already had the floor on when I decided this so I just cut a hole in each corner for the post and quick-creted them in there. This is just a few pictures of the first walls going up. Yes, I know they are not framed like they should be.. But I am short on lumber and it is only going to support a tin roof.

Finally got all the walls put up and then we began the roof. I finally got a little help so me, my cousin, and my dad got the roof on and windows in one day. I am back at school now so I can't get any farther but this weekend I am planning on putting both doors in and finishing up the rest of the plywood on the gable ends. Maybe even putting a siding on and starting a porch!

Very nice. I love the old galvanized roof you put on. Does the creek ever flood as high as the camp?

Thanks a lot. dk1393- The creek does get pretty high occasionally but not ever high enough to come into the cabin. This is on our family land and my great grandpa grew up on this farm. According to him, my grandpa, and dad there has only been one time where they think the water could have potentially come in. It's such a flat area around the creek I feel like it would take a whole lot for it to flood all the way up to the floor. Definitely something to keep in mind though. Mostly everything I have used I have found really cheap or know someone who was nice enough to give it to me. I didn't have to pay for the roofing, windows, doors, or the wood stove that will hopefully go in this weekend! I have found that if I am patient I can get what I really want for a lot cheaper, or even for free!

Does anyone have any advice on some good cheap flooring or siding ideas? I can't seem to find anything for a decent price. All siding and plywood is extremely high right now in my area. Any ideas? I have the 2x6 joists with just 7/16 osb for flooring right now. I know it isn't strong enough so I am trying to add some sort of plank-like flooring for cheap to go crossways across the floor joists.

I got to work on the cabin this weekend and got a decent amount of work done. We ended up getting all the OSB on the walls, one door on, the deck of the porch, and the wood stove in. So overall, a productive weekend. Hopefully on my Easter break we will finish the porch, add the other door, install insulation, and put siding on! I have a few pictures now but hopefully i'll be able to post some later of everything we got done.

Check your local sawmills for 1x6 x8' "green" rough cut pine, here it is only $1.50 a board still green......I am going to use it for flooring and board and batten siding, from a sawmill its full 1x6 , calculates to $12 for 32 sq. ft. same coverage as a sheet of plywood. I am going to rip the battens out of the boards as well.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I will definitely look into that. It was pretty rainy and nasty today so i just took a few pictures of the inside. Don't have a whole lot in there yet but we do have the wood stove in, cots, a cabinet, and a MUST have...deer mount!

Went down to the cabin after a decent amount of rain. Creek is definitely up! It was actually pretty cool to have the creek that high and hear it rushing around the cabin. It only went up about 2 feet and we got A LOT of rain. So this makes me feel better about whether or not the water will ever reach the cabin or not.
This picture is out of the big window next to the front front door.

Anybody know what this skull is? We found it about 25 yards away from the cabin. We first thought it could have just been a dog. But these teeth are HUGE. A lot bigger than any of our dogs teeth and we have four (including a german shepard). Looks too big to be a coyote to me. We compared it to the upper jaw of a black bear and they look very similar. Any chance that this could be a bear?

Got some work done this weekend on the cabin! I talked to a local sawmill and ended up getting a bundle of "rine" boards. I had never heard of these but they are rough cut and are about 1"x(6"-15" wide)x9. I actually ended up really liking the fact that they all have different widths anywhere from 6-15". I like the staggered look! It was only 180 bucks for 100 of these boards. I did the porch deck and three walls of siding this weekend!

I would say forsure It's a bear. . a large bear skull would have a combined length + width measurment of 20 in.
