Has anybody given much thought to emergency planning in and around the cabin. There was just a school trip here that had to fly out 6 kids after their cabin burned with all their winter clothes. Nobody was hurt but it makes you wonder what would happen if you lost your shelter, gloves or boots. The closest shelter to me would be over 5km away. That could be rough at -40.

I frequently work alone at my place. I use the find-me-spot service. You can send messages for help or use the 911 feature for immediate assistance. This service is used by climbers, outback skiers, etc.
Gives my wife peace of mind.

fire was a concern of mine so i have two cabins 100 yards apart. both have a wood stove, solar array, battery bank, insulated interior etc.
since i can't get fire insurance i have a back up cabin as my insurance
(i live at the cabin year round, actually the back up was the little one i used to live in, i moved into a bigger one when i could afford to build it, left solar equipment and 2 car batteries in the old one and put my good stuff in the new one, could still live in the little one but its mostly for storage now, keep a coat, boots, etc with a sleeping bag in the little one).
also the outhouse has a sign on the door that says guest bedroom

Nooo,other than having a back door to escape out of,I'd have to grab my cell phone,cloths and boot's or shoes and coat and run to the barn to call 911.
