Been planning my cabin for awhile now. Trying to get a good material price list together. I'm building a 16x24 cabin on a 12/12 pitch roof. 16x16 loft. 8x24 front porch. I have all the windows and doors. I think I can get it all weathered in, roof $1000 metal, roof cut board on board siding for around $12000. Any thoughts or suggestions?

1. Everything costs twice what you think it will.
2. Whenever you buy more than enough of something for the job it will always be a little short of what you actually need.
3. No matter how many you buy, you will never have enough 2 x 4s.
Just a few observations from someone wrapping up construction on their first cabin.

If you are talking dried in and sided, pier foundation and no interior finishes, then 12k sounds high to me, you should be able to have materials AND a contractor do it for 12k.....I know I could here, easily.

I've been gradually collecting materials for my cabin on Craigs list for the last few years. For instance, just the other day I finally found the 3/4" floor plywood from a guy who used it as a temporary dance floor for his kids. I paid him $20 a sheet, here in the stores it costs close to $30.
Ive found similar deals for sheath plywood, rigid foam insulation, 2x8s, a woodstove, stovepipe, insulation, etc. This will save me a lot on the final cost. Also, having saved up these materials, when I do the build I'll have far less to buy from the yards at that time, so I'll need less cash then. I can gradually fit these Craigs list finds into my budget as I go.
But, this takes time. I've been looking for the 3/4 ply for over a year now, finally found it. Also, I have to store all this stuff. My two little sheds are full of stuff now, and the mice are getting into the insulation....

put together a list of materals ,have every one you can, contribute to it, including your building supply store . Throw out what you think is'nt necissary .add 50 studs ,include cash sail and delivery .and shop the list around to any one you can .then you will know you have a price thats close ...I did that on a 24 x 24 and there was a differance of 1800$ ,,, home depot was the highest and a small independent 60 miles away was the best . total cost"closed in" 6200$ but that was 13 years ago .good luck

Not sure if this will be helpful, but I recently did a 16x30 cabin + 8x30 porch (overall footprint 24x30). I installed the foundation / floor and a local Amish builder constructed the shell (sided with T111), roof (sheathed + 40-yr metal), door and 4 windows for around $7500 including transportation charges (they had to travel 150 miles). I probably have $2500 into the foundation and floor, but that would have been substantially less if I had used plywood flooring instead of 2x8 T&G pine.

If your doing all the work yourself,I think you can have a nice cabin shell up for that kind of money, with foundation,floor,4 walls and the roof it's feasible.Especially if you have the doors and windows already.If your planning to go with a metal roof,don't waste your money on the cheap,flimmsey stuff from home depot or lowes.Go with heavier stuff.I use a company called MS metal sales www.metalsales.us.com
They offer 23 different colors and custom cut lengths to your specs.(and it's cheaper too!)
