well I haven't gotten to the hard bit yet but this is the drawings I've done in sketchup of what I want my cabin to be. Sketchup is an amazing tool for stuff like this, I taught myself to use it in a couple days and there are tonnes of tutorials available. So far my building cost is around 10k. It'll be wired for a genny and have propane lights. Theres a potbelly and a cookstove there. Not sure how to get the pics to show instead of just links to my google drive...

Any criticisms are welcome! It shows dormers in some of the pictures but I've opted out of that on account of cost and time.
Still havent totally figured a foundation out.

And if anyone would like the sketchup file of this cabin to make a start at designing your own send me a message and I'll send it to you for sure.

Looks cool. I never took the time to learn sketchup....
looks like a neat way to design a cabin.

Maybe a simple question for some but I'm not a pro so I'll ask. From your sketches it looks like you are going to have a 4ft overhang on the ends. It is showing 2 trusses hanging off the end. How will you support them?

you were right to ask, the trusses on the end are wrong in the drawing, i just got too lazy ;). There'll be a drop gable and drop truss, with a ladder support built across between the two.

now here's a link to some photos of the actual cabin going up over the last few weeks. My brother and lovely lady and I have been boogying trying to get this thing ready for its scissor trusses which will arrive next week (!).

working on bracing the bottom today.

Loving the Honda wheelie shot with the mountain backdrop, kind of overshadows the whole cabin build... Might even need to start an atc thread.

The rest looks good too...

Cabin has come a long way since starting spring before last. Hereès some assorted pics of the cabin and area.

Very cool! Those are some amazing views.

I like the location of your stove and the stairs to the loft.

thanks! The stove alone was a lot of work, I rebuilt it from the ground up. It's around a century old and had seen better days.

Great use of Sketchup!!!

I used sketchup in a different way... to map out a 3D model of my property. Sketchup has a feature where it can pull in an image and topology information from google earth.

Looks terrific and the views and location seem pretty spectacular - good for you and your family.

I almost was in agreement with Gregjman about the honda wheelie mountain shot overshadowing the build, so I am glad you posted up new pics so I could refocus my attention back to the cabin...lol..lol..lol.

The stove looks amazing - a lot of effort I am sure, but looks worth it in the end.

Enjoy Enjoy Enjoy and more wheelie and snowmobile pictures please and thanks...lol..lol..and of course the cabin...lol..lol.

Congrats on your hard work and efforts.

Thanks Pookie! I certainly feel pretty lucky to have the opportunity to build this cabin, it's been crazy amounts of work and finding deals and learning but all worth it. Now I just need to finish the outhouse...and the kitchen...and the bedroom...and the siding....it never ends! Cheers.

If you are going to build that roof and clean that chimney pipe yourself, I hope you are ok with heights and the dangers steep roofs pose. If you are the least bit concerned, I would have second thoughts about it.

What about polished concrete for the counter tops? Some work and expense, but long lasting and durable......just a thought.

Plus, looks pretty nice once completed.....

You're right, the roof was hard to build but with a lot of scaffolding and other odd rigging we got it done and now with the powder coated steel shingles we put on it sheds snow wonderfully. The cabin is in an area where it gets an average of 40 feet of snowfall per year so a steep roof is a must.

I really considered that! But I don't really want to add all that weight to the kitchen area, my foundation is 17 6x6 posts on individual 3x3 concrete slabs, and while we built it very strong and well braced I need to watch out for that. Nevermind the huge stone tiled fireplace hahaha
