I live in the county on the edge of city limits. I have chickens and rabbits in pens cats have been trying to get to my animals so I have been trapping them for about a year the ones that are left will not go in a trap. S o I called the county animal control and said if I see these cats trying to get to my live stock can I shoot them. Her response was [ this is her own words] If a child was trying to get in your chicken pen would you shoot him. I said no maam a child is a human and a cat is a animal trying to kill my live stock. She said that cats have the same right as humans and if I shoot a cat they will charge me with a felony .
I would like to know how y'all would respond to this

Have you tried to get them in a havaheart trap? Maybe use cat food and then take them on a very long ride.

YES i have caught 20 cats in the last year . The ones that are left will not go in a trap.
I worked for F.W.C. catching nuisance alligators for 6 yrs so I do know that I can shoot any animal that is trying to kill my live stock. I was just blown away by their response and was curios to see if others would feel the same way

Don't shoot the cats !!!! Fence in your livestock....... put a hot wire around the perimeter. Don't shoot the cats.

u know...we had a cat on our property with rabies.we had no gun.we learned from that experience.dumb nice me.i saw it all mangled up and one eye looking up at me laying in our old camper where gar left his tools at...we got to the cabin and he opened that.there is that cat.i got a tuna can and put water in it...and it would not drink.i got down lower and poured water on its paw thinking maybe it would lick its paw.well it had dry rabies.i did not know there is two kinds.the cats jaws were locked shut.it could have stratched me.so it went away.
i found it the next day by our camp site in bushes and once again tried to feed it.it ran off.we started hammering and building .it showed how crazy it was.gar my hubby had to go to the neighbors to get him to shoot this cat.sometimes u just have to do what u have to do.
we have a cougar seen at our property now.i dont know if its holed up on in the mobile home we have to tear out.i told my sister i am scared.she loves cats so much.well.hmm.she cried dont shoot it.well i had my grandkids over there playing.so anyway.i am hoping it was just running thru.
i am glad i talked to another group and they told me call the wildlife and game dept.they will get it.so sometimes we do what we can and sometimes its not something to please everyone.thats how i look at it.

If my house dog is seen chasing deer at my cabin, whether it actually brings one down or not, she could be shot on-site. To prevent that I wrap my dog in hunter orange when we're out in the woods, and otherwise keep her from chasing deer. Same with cats in my opinion... keep them at home if you don't want anything to happen to them. If not... they're taking chances as many I know practice the S, S and SU method mentioned above- especially if they are after another animal considered more valuable than them. And some people place a pretty low value on roaming cats.

I think the person you asked spends waaayyyy more time in the city then she does in the country.

In my state, they are now allowing ranchers to shoot wolves that are going after livestock. Its all legal, so the SSS is now just SS.

This could be the personal feelings of a government employee. I would call the dog catcher or county equivalent. You, as property owner are doing your part penning your animals. Someone else is not being a good pet owner letting their animal roam freely. I personally don't believe defense of property would be a felony, but I would talk to a lawyer and know my landowner rights before doing anything foolish.

At our cabin there is a property owner very near us who has a pack of dogs (4 or 5) that he lets run free. So far they bit one woman and threatened several others including myself and my well controlled dog. Tthey hobbled a moose calf that fish and game had to put down. My neighbor has started walking with her pistol, and another with bear spray out of fear. My husband and neighbor agreed that if the dog threatens them they will shoot on site. I adore dogs, but they are animals, and left too much freedom will begin to revert to wild behavior.

I have heard its not legal to hunt deer with dogs up north . It is legal in Florida and that's the way most do it hear. I can kill more deer just stalking them . but I do love to hear them dogs trailing though

Call the sheriff department, get a statement from them and send it to the cat lover. I had to do this with a neighbors dog that killed some of my rabbits. I ended up trapping the dog and broke its leg. Owner threatened to sue. I showed them the sheriff statement and they went away and I never had the dog problem again.

Deo... I can't speak for all the northern states, but I know hunting deer with dogs is illegal in both PA and Maryland. One reason is because of the snow. If we have a decent snow-fall, it's not unusual for the snow to get an icy crust after a few days. Dogs can often run very fast across the crust, where deer always break through and can't run at all. Even a small dog can catch and bring down a large deer under those circumstances, so it's not considered "faire chase". Hunters and land-owners will shoot dogs chasing deer- especially under those conditions.

PA-Bound, I can see why. I have all ways wondered why. I thought it was because of so much open ground . Now I know better. Thanks for the info

we like in the country on the edge of town. We have had one cat that we consider to be ours. There is an old saying that you own a dog , but just feed a cat, they are their own master. We have a lot of stray cats show up .I expect they are dropped off . I live trap them , roll the trap around a lot and let them loose .Usually don't see them again If they return and are causing problems , it is usually a one way trip. Old 243
