what is the best thing to put out to reduce ticks? I have about a 1/2 acre lot cleared at the cabin the rest is 56 acres nature. A granular would be best so I could spread with my pull behind broadcast spreader. Can you even keep ticks back on just a lot when surrounded by heavy cover?

have read diatameous earth works.
and keeping grass cut down.
my sister lives in big city down south.
when they had alot of animals and ticks were severe
they had to have house "tented".
i askef her what that was. she said the whole house
was covered in a tent for a few days.
i guess it worked but man can you imagine?

I know some people are against chemicals, but I have to say that this stuff really works. I use a combination of two chemicals which I apply a few weeks before the kids come down to the cabin for the first time in the season. Both chemicals are used broadly and are proven to be very safe. I spray them using a backpack sprayer or an ATV-mounted sprayer. Be sure to not only cover the grass in the clearing, but the surrounding brush to ~10ft high.
Malathion (pesticide): This is the stuff that your municipality sprays from a truck at the beginning of mosquito season. It is very effective at killing adult ticks/mosquitos on contact. Effective for up to 3 weeks after application.
Pyriproxyfen (insect growth regulator): This is what is in most cat & dog flea/tick topical treatments. It prevents the larva stage of fleas, ticks & mosquitos from developing into the adult stage, which means they are unable to reproduce. This breaks the reproductive cycle, effectively terminating the entire population. Effective for up to 6 months after application.

I mix them and apply at the same time. They are both available from numerous sources - I've ordered from domyownpestcontrol.com in the past. 1 gallon of Malathion 57% + 110ml of NyGuard IGR will set you back ~$100 but you'll have enough for 2-3 years. I typically only need to apply once in the spring, but depending on your exact location, you may need to re-apply in the summer or fall.

Oh, and I should mention, NyGuard IGR is listed for indoor and outdoor use, and for both food and non-food areas. This means it is considered safe to use in your cabin, in the kitchen, around the foundation perimeter, etc. Just keep it off of food preparation and food contact surfaces (such as utensils, cutting boards, etc - read the label for proper usage guidelines).

Both are safe around pets, provided the usage guidelines are followed (don't let them ingest it, let it dry before letting them run around on treated surfaces).

It's not as good as the label says it is!
Plus it breaks down into a more toxic substance in sunlight and it is highly toxic to bees, water life and birds...and yes chickens!
Now on the subject of chickens...one season with a flock of free ranging chickens in your yard will control your tick population to near non existent.

The Amish in our area recommend taking Odorless Garlic supplements.
My husband and I started those in January to get ready for tick season and it works great. I have only gotten 2-3 tick bites this year and they weren't real dug in either. I am a believer!
