The old outhouse my dad built at our camping property when I was 3 has seen better days. I decided over the weekend to build a new one. This site has been a wealth of knowledge for me over the years, so I thought it was my responsibility to contribute something, so here goes....

Started with a 4x4 base out of 2x6 treated (also had a middle joist not pictured)

Added floor which is 3/4 treated ply. My son wanted to check fit, this was the most appropriate photo of the bunch.... kids....

Framed up, 7' in front, 6' in back

15/32 ply for the siding

all packed up and ready to move to the country

mostly assembled

Primed what i have so far, will cover with tarp until my next trip out.

The outhouse is set on pavers and i dug a hole about 3 ft deep and 2+ ft around. Should be plenty for our 1-2 monthly overnights. I am going with corrugated opaque roofing to keep it bright inside. The toilet itself will be constructed from 6-5gal buckets (i'll explain with pics later) and a "Luggable Loo" type lid. I will also be installing a vent pipe from the floor up through the roof to keep the smell down inside the building. The door is also built and primed, but somehow managed to avoid the camera. My son wanted it to have a crescent moon, so it does, and everything will be painted drab green to match all our other buildings on the property.

Updates to come when I make more progress!

Just for fun, here is our cabin on this property. Been in the family for 35 years. Many good memories as a child and creating more with my own family now!

For venting consider two pipes. One runs from higher inside and extends high up above the roof. Paint this black so during the
Day it heats and drafts the odor up and out. Keep the toilet and surrounding area well sealed including the seat and add a second vent that runs deeper into the pit but only slightly above the roof. This provides the intake air in most scenarios. In my case as I knew the prevailing winds I added 45 degree bends on the top with the black pipe facing the wind and the white away. These also provide a good spot for the bug screen. As long as the seat cover is put down after use this will keep the Oscar away from the inside.

good thought on two vent pipes.... anything to keep the smell down! any thoughts on a vent low by the ground and then a stack, kind of like an attic is designed? or will the low vent attract animals?

as for the inside, we wanted this cabin to be very simple. we call it a "tool shed with a stove". i have a real house that i live in, so when i camp i want to camp, not go to another house!

this is the main room, it is 8x12. there is also another room, the "bedroom" that is 8x8 that we sleep in.

That cabin is great, I could make it a full-time house of it. Actually, my off-grid house will not really be much larger.. just a different footprint.

ok, so the business end of the outhouse is in. i don't like bench type seats in outhouses, so i decided to use a 5gal bucket on the floor. i couldn't figure out how to get it hooked to the floor with a hole cut in the bottom until a week ago when i was at work looking at a stack of empty buckets......

i am using 5 buckets cut just below the rim where the handle attaches, and the hole in the floor is cut the same as the bucket, so the rim sits flush on the floor, then i can stack them up, get my height and good to go!

i left the top bucket full length and just cut the bottom out, this way i can take it out and clean it if needed and it effectively acts like a funnel going down into the hole.

last night we were able to get it most of the way done (all but the vents). very happy with the outcome and it blends right into the woods!
