Can a shipping container be used as battery storage? It is 25 feet from proposed small cabin & wires would run underground between the 2 structures. Solar panels will be portable.

Batteries can be stored anywhere reasonable (dry, protected, etc). If they are flooded lead acid type then you need to provide ventilation in order to expel hydrogen gas that is produced. Not so much of an issue with sealed AGM type, but even that type produces some hydrogen.
Be sure and calculate the voltage loss between your shipping container and cabin....you may end up running some very large wires depending on the application.
I would also recommend making some acrylic, wood, or whatever shields to make them "touch safe". That way if you are using the shipping container for other storage you wont have an issue accidently shorting out the terminals. Drop an aluminum lawn chair on battery terminals and its not pretty!
If you are wiring a lot of them in series to produce high voltage then there are other precautions you must take. I assume you're doing a bank less than 48V total.

Thanks, Gomer. The bank will definitely be less than 48V. Am still working on the projected load in the cabin.
