Hello, I am looking into building a saltbox style cabin similair to the attached picture. My dimensions are approx. 18 feet x 18 feet but I am flexible to change it a bit. Also want to have a loft in the half of the saltbox that has a higher roof. Does anyone have any tips for building the framing or know of a plan I could buy/download free? We live in Northern Alberta so snow and warmth are a big concern.

I'm hoping folks jump in with all kinds of ideas. I have been planning a shed roof style on a 16X32, and wanted the high wall to face the south for passive solar, but also wanted my solar panels on the roof to help them resist the temptation of walking off.

This is great style that I'd never considered nor, truthfully, seen before. I won't have much use for a loft, I'm too fat, and always assumed that whether I used stairs or a ladder the bottom is where 'they' would find me. I can use it for storage I suppose and get a scrawny friend to climb and fetch.

I always fear salt box style roofs, but that's up north where snow load enters into the equation. I have built two or three. I used a large ridge plank supported well and even some sort of post or wall in the middle.

Thanks for the input Owen. I too find the design a little fearful. Perhaps if built as a timber frame it would give more confidence.

Josh: I think the siding is refurbished old wooden house siding, re-stained in alternating colours.
