I'm close to the point I need to pick a siding. I want the look of the wood so I want to stain whatever we use instead of paint. Our thoughts now are to go with board and batten. There are some local sawmills I might be able to get some rough sawn boards.

I then had another idea. What about using the 4 x 8 sheets of reverse board and batten and adding some 2 or 3 inch strips over the recessed portion of the siding. I think this would get the look with a little easier install. I'm not sure about the price of the sawmill boards yet or even if they are available.

Anybody ever use the sheets and added the battens? Any thoughts on the idea?

Hey grover! I'm glad your build is going well.

We got a deal on treated plywood we could not resist. We used that and added treated 1x6 split in half for battens. It worked well for us. We then primed and painted it.

Grover, you are thinking of T1-11, then just adding the strips over the groove. The grooved stuff comes in 4, 6 and 8". I suspect 8" would be the way to go, unless you can get it in 12".

True batten boards may not give you the sheer strength, so you may have to sheet the studs with 1/2 plywood or OSB (personally, I hate OSB and didn't use a bit of the stuff in my cabin, plywood only...) then you can use true batten boards over it, or if you do the T1-11, it will give you the sheer strength code calls for with the one layer. I've seen it done and it looks real good too. I'd use the plywood T1-11 vs the strand or fiber board molded T1-11.

We just (yesterday in fact) finished siding our place with 1 inch thick, rough sawn oak board and batt. Holy crap am I tired!

It took a week to get done and that stuff is heavy as all get out but I figure it will be there when I am gone. It looks great, too. Glad we went with it.

Didn't get any pics of the finished work yesterday and it is raining this morning but I will get some up later today.

Hardy Plank painted cedar color! I know it's not wood but after seeing all the problems with wood siding it's what ill be putting on my next house.

Hardy Plank painted

Makes for a very low maintenance exterior. Paint sticks like a magnet to steel. Sometimes it can earn a discount of the home insurance too (fire resistant).

We have been researching the siding and right now it looks like real wood is no longer an option. I hate that but I'm just afraid of the upkeep and how it will look in a few years.(especially cedar)
The board and batten from a local sawmill is still a possibility but we are leaning toward the fiber cement siding with a woodgrain in it. Probably will paint it a darker color, something that will blend in to the surroundings.
I did see some camo vinyl siding at the building supply place!
