here in central wva,had a 24x32 barn style house shell built,put insulation up on the inside and the walls proceeded to sweat,we havent put up the interior walls yet..didnt want it to mold so we took the insulation down till later when we finish walls do we need to put any thing else up other than the insulation to keep the walls from sweating..there is only t1-11 on the walls from the exterior..please & thank you kim(wva)

hello, where is everyone at? would like to hear from someone out there with some home building skills..i would hate to put my insulation & beadboard up and find out that its sweating behind it.. advice please....thank you ,kim(wva)

I imagine there was no housewrap since you used the T1-11?
The sweating is because of the lack of a vapour barrier. You get condensation where the warm interior air meets the cold.
I could be wrong, but you should be fine if you just install a proper vapour barrier on the interior side of the insulation, and seal it well with tuck tape.

Thanks for the info..u are right , no house wrap, but the insulation had brown kraft on it..we're guessing that it sweated because we didnt have the interior wall up. we will put the insulation back up with the beadboard inside,after we tape the seams.Will this be enough to keep from sweating?Thank you for your reply..all advice is appreciated..kim

Kim - also remember that most new construction lumber is usually "wet" to some degree. Wet is a relative term; i.e. kiln dried, air dried, and for how long. That may be some of your problem until it reaches equilibrium with the surrounding conditions.

As Jerry said, "new" stud lumber can be as high as 20% -23% moisture...by comparison furniture construction with hardwood about 8-11%.
How thick are you walls + insulation 2x6 with R-19? What is your Heat Source? some styles of no vent gas "heaters" produce a fair amount of water vapor when they run.... A 6 mil poly Vapor barrier should suffice. Overlap edges by at least 6 inches.

Kim,
Can you update us on how this turned out. I am also building cabin from a shell that has t1-11 siding and no outside house wrap and am confused on what to do on the inside.. Ive been told by some to wrap the inside with 6mil poly before the finish work is put up, and others have told me not to do that because it wont allow the walls to breathe and cause moisture to accumulate under my finished walls , in my case pine tongue and groove panels.
