Hello to all. I'm a new visitor to this site and couldn't resist sharing my love for all things cabin. I own a 10.6 acre property on Virginias Northern Neck. It is near the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay. I bought this property in January of 2010 and have been working on the place every since. If I can figure out how to do this, I would like to start a page on my cabin building adventures. I love this forum.

Thanks for checking in, my fellow Virginians! I have quit twitter and do absolutely no social media. Most social media is about politics and anymore all that stuff makes me wanna puke. I like to hit my getaway as much as possible. I live in the Shenandoah Valley, so anyone familiar with Virginia knows that I have over three hours to the Northern Neck. So because of the distance I only go over there a tad more than one weekend a month. But hey, I love the salt water and we only have that along the roads after the plow trucks come through in the winter. As a kid, me and my brothers and neighboring cousins all went up on the hill at my dads farm where I grew up, and camped every Friday night (year round) in an old cattle shed that was known as the red shed. We never had ATV's, so we fixed up old lawn mowers and uses them for transportation. I was born in Northern Indiana, so being from Dutch country, we called our rides Hoopys. It would take me years to tell all the Red Shed stories but I might share a few. Oh well, all that has given me a love for campin in pioneer fashion, so now I relive my childhood by headin to the Northern Neck and totally chillin for a few days. Building my cabin WAS hard work, but a serious blast. It is 16'x28' with a 16'x16' loft. I will attempt to load some pics for y'alls viewing pleasure. Blessings

Norseman, I have a pal from Va Beach who owns a sweet farm in Southhampton County. I hunt there some and it's a great place. His farm is near Boykin. Probably less than 15 minutes from North Carolina.

Adakseabee, Thanks for the welcome. You have grit going that far to camp. To think that I thought 3.5 hours sucked to get to the Northern Neck makes me look feeble. I'm assuming that if you grew up in New York state, you still have family there? Makes sense anyway. I hope you find Va to be a nice place to live. I enjoy Va Beach, but couldn't take the tidewater area traffic on a daily basis. The worst part of going to my cabin is the Charlottesville, Richmond, and Machanicsville traffic. But I would drive thru Manhattan if that's what it took to get to paradise.

Richmondgolf, I have hiked to the top of Mount Rogers in Greyson county. I must say that southwest Va is a beautiful place.

The top of Mt. Rogers is a beautiful place and I really enjoy hiking the AT around there. Was just up at the cabin this past weekend and it is peak season for us (~2500ft). Colors were gorgeous.

Very pretty indeed. Thanks for sharing the photos. Me and wifey and kids drove a stretch of the Shenandoah National Park Sunday afternoon and took a hike thru Big Meadows. The Blue Ridge Mountains are gorgeous now also. The thing that stands out to me about the Ap Trail going up on mount Rogers was the rocks. Real rugged section on trail. I also liked the wind swept ridges near the top and noticed the trees had limbs mostly on one side only. I believe the wind up there could play heck on the trees. I was only there once. It was 19 years ago on a high school camping trip. I really should go back.

This is my cabin on the Northern Neck. Me and two friends had it under tar paper in one week. It was like an Amish barn raising. We didn't have a lift.

I'm heading over this weekend. Planning to go to the Urbana oyster festival. If you like oysters, that is the place to be!! My wife and my cousin Rodney and his wife are going along. You wanna see crazy? Rodney can single handedly paint a town!!

Hi Salty. My family and I live in Moorefield, WEST By GOD Virginia. About an hour's drive from you. I too have plans of building a small 16x16 cabin one day, but until then I will have to settle for enjoying reading everyone's posts on this site. But also glad to see a fellow NNK'er. My folks have been going to Leedstown Campground on the Rappahannock since the early 70's and still go on a nearly weekly basis for about five months out of the year. If I could make it happen I would build my cabin here in WV and live on the Rappahannock.

Thanks for responding. I was beginning to wonder if anybody had a clue where the Northern Neck is. I have been to Moorefield. If mountains is what a fellow is after, its hard to beat West Va. As for the Rappahannock River, I have aspirations of retiring on it. Nothing like not being able to wait to get old.  I have a waterfront lot under contract now. Will be closing this month. I plan to start building this winter. (just a small cabin for now) When I have new place ready, I plan to sell the other one.

We have not yet gotten land. We are looking to do so in the next year or so. We are looking in Powhatan or Amelia. My husband works in downtown Richmond three days a week or so. So we have to stay close.

If you guys like water, the James River is close by. Are y'all looking to live on your property? Or just weekend there? As of now I go to the Bay on weekends, but can't wait to retire there. I gotta quit wishing my life away.

We will be living there and making a sort of a mini homestead. Eventually probably obtaining the furry sort of lawn mowes and brush hogs. Perhaps even some chickens. Our kids are still real small so we are hoping to have some fun with them and teach them some important life lessons and give them some life skill along the way.

That's the spirit. I'm lucky enough to live on a farm. I have a small flock of chickens. We raise a few calves and goats. Also have two miniature horses. The country is a great place to live. Your children will learn many important lessons living on a farm. Not to mention fresh veggies!!
