I own some land in the area of Alamosa CO and would like to have a small cabin built. I was thinking something around 20x24. I would want the inside unfinished but the outside done to include windows and doors. No utilities.

I've seen several people ask for recommendations on small cabin builders in their area. I respect what you want, but I think there is no difference between looking for a small cabin builder and just looking for the right contractor. But maybe that's what you meant. I don't live in your area, but for what it's worth, here are general thoughts on finding a builder:
Since building a small cabin is usually done in a rural area, your choices will be limited. I think one of the most important things is to find a person who lives close by so they have a minimum of commuting gas to buy. Obviously that's not the only qualification, but you don't want someone who quits half way through cause he's sick of all that driving. You can also put him/her up at your land if they are willing to camp.
You need to decide how you want to design the cabin. Some builders will design it for you- just give them a concept on a napkin and they'll do the rest. Or, if you are like me, you can design it in careful detail and then have them build the design.
Talk to local builders and find the person that matches the project. A carpenter that is used to working for a contractor might not be the right person to rely on to design the project, but if you are there to guide him, he'll do what he does best- just build. A contractor used to doing larger jobs might charge you too much, since he's used to working on projects with bank financing. A small independent contractor used to doing smaller jobs like this, with the design and organizational skills, might be the best match.
You'll need to decide if you want to pay the person by the hour, or get them to give you a specific bid on a specific amount of work. If the latter, you need to give them the exact scope of work, somehow.
Never, ever, ever, pay a contractor the final payment until all the work is done. Always hold back at least some. Dangle the carrot.

Have you thought about doing the building yourself? My wife and I looked at all of the options including kits and prefabs delivered to our land NW of Trinidad and finally decided to build ourselves. Only 12X16 with 6X6 addition on end for bathroom but it was more fun than work at the end and we ended up with this.........

We thought about attempting this but it is rather intimidating since I have never worked with wood like would be required for this. I think I could finish the inside but to have something built and at least dried in would be great.

We thought the same but there it is. There is a cabin sitting
in the parking lot of the Trinidad Big R, the company prefabs them. I can't for the life of me find their name but if I go down this weekend I'll get the contact info for you.

What about something like "Angies List" for a good contractor. This would be a perfect little job to hold a builder over till spring or when the building business picks up or in between jobs. You could pull the permit yourself and you be the sub???
Contract just a dried in shell. Then you are safe for the weather. You can do lots of things like paint etc yourself. Then contract out inside, ie wiring, plumbing, sheetrock, trim, cabinets etc later, one one at a time to match your budget. But if you are the contractor, you wil have to pull the permit yourself. Dont be afraid, its much easier than you think. Rural counties seem to be very freindly and enjoy these project. I was told by my inspector they love headed out to the woods looking at cabins (much more relaxing/peaceful) . Much better than in town traffic looking at a new Wal Mart construction etc.

I have spoken with Colorado camping cabins but where I have my land in Blanca Colorado the county requires a minimum 600 sq ft requirement for a cabin recreational use even if you live in it for 1 day. I am very hesitant on taking on a building project like I want to build a 20 x 30 cabin since they only thing I have built was a 8 x 10 shed from a kit from lowes, plus there is a lot of building codes from Costilla county that one must pass and I don't think I will pass a lot of their inspectors. The county is revising the land use codes in September so I'm hoping they relax all their rules and regulations and I would also like to find a contractor to build me a shell in the Mt. Blanca.

I am in South Park and I just took delivery of a Cumberland Building. They are sold out of Buena Vista. My understanding is that since these buildings are built on skids, and not a permanent structure, you can avoid having to deal with the county unless you add plumbing of any kind. I am no legal expert, this was my understanding of the rules in Park County.
Cumberland was very professional in all my dealings, and delivered the shed to my property from Grand Junction. The trailers they drop them from are pretty maneuverable and they can set them about anywhere. Supposedly they are built by the Amish.

I think with the tiny cabin/small house movement, that is going to have to change. They all push green, there is nothing greener than a cabin/home with less materials used to construct it and a much smaller footprint. All green. I'm no eco nut bag/greenie, but I do like the idea of small homes. It also makes it easier for anyone to be mortgage free too.
I hate it when a county says you can lot live in a space that small. If it has everything a large home does, IE all the amenities needed, I have no idea why square footage is an issue with them. Well, I do, taxes are based on square footage and the more you are forced to build, the more they collect in property taxes.

Mtn hi thanks for the Cumberland info I will look into them and see if they make something in the 600 sq ft range since this is the minimum requirement in Blanca CO.
Costilla county requires permit for anything over 120 sq ft regardless lack of plumbing as I understand it from speaking with the county planning & zoning. They just make it so difficult for someone who just wants to put a small recreational cabin to use 2-3 times a year. Grrrrr!

mdt tech I agree with you. As of yet they have not revised their land use codes that were supposed be approved and implemented last month. I am no eco nut or tree hugger either but I believe they really need to be more laxed on all there rules and regulations and let people build their dream homestead. I just hope I don't lose interest and just give up on building anything in Blanca......

How long have you had your Cumberland and how is the build quality? We are looking at the 10X12 with a four foot porch.
Per my login handle we're in southpark too and have officially agreed that next year we start putting together our plan (roughly three 10X12 adjoined with a common deck).
Besides Cumberland and CO Camping Cabins there is a dealer for WeatherKing in Colorado Springs with similar offerings and at least the south end of South Park is in their free delivery area.
Hope you can make it up to there soon we made it last weekend and the aspens were beautiful.
Also, if anyone has the link to the old cabin post I have a few pictures of mining cabins I captured from my goat hunt.

I've been up there the last four weekends, it's been nice. I have had the building for a little over 3 weeks now. The quality is good, just a few issues like warped deck post and stain on the window trim but overall I am satisfied. Have them spray foam the underside, once they are on the ground it's pretty much impossible to get underneath.
Sounds like we are near eachother, I'm pretty close to Guffey.
Y2K I hope you are able to figuread something out.

Thanks for the advice on the spray foam underneath RckyMtnHi. I was wondering how I'd get it lifted enough to crawl underneath to insulate, they didn't show that as option on the website. Is it a price per sq/ft or standard charge. Also, keep me posted, not sure how the spray foam holds up to rodents/porcupines (think we have a couple at our place based on girdling of some young Ponderosa trees).
We are indeed are close to each other, I'm about 6 miles south of Hartsel as the the crow flies (off CR53 - just east). Happy to hear you've been able spend a few weekends up there, it's been a great fall in CO!

Harstel is in SouthPark CO (just like the cartoon), it's in Park County CO, there are 3 parks that I know of in CO that are large valleys in the mountains: NorthPark near Walden CO, MiddlePark near Grandby/GrankLake, and SouthPark with Fairplay/Como/Jefferson.
It's about 90 minutes from Denver off HWY 285 or 90 minutes via 1-25 to CO24 thru Woodland Park.

I really like the Stagestop area, we have good friends that have a cabin/shack there (it's actually a closer drive). Wish I could afford just a lot to have the fishing rights. Our location in S.P. is largely based on proximity to fishing with about 5 miles as the crow flies to both Antero and Spinney and close to the Tomahawk state wildlife area.
I've never fished Eleven mile, how's that for flyfishing?

Yeah why we bought in Stagestop (private access on Tarryall) Flyfishing was amazing there all summer water low now but still good Eleven mile was good tailwater avg fish prob 2 lbs?

I was there last weekend flying out again tomorrow night beautiful fun area wildlife( Stagestop saloon ) right in middle of flyfishing heaven
Speaking wildlife had yogi up on our deck a few weeks ago had his way with our grill crazy

Great looking fish, hope to spend more time fishing next year, this year was tough with scouting and training for my goat hunt.
Cabin looks great, fun place to relax and as you said close to the Stagestop saloon - perfect all around.
Bears have been tough this year, my father-in-law lives in Conifer and he's had sow/cubs and boars on and off since spring. Saw the last one a month ago about 400lb pure black. I like the that cinnamon color on the one in your picture. Hope you enjoy the SouthPark fall and get in some good last minute fishing.

Mark-you need to take a break and chuck some flies.Where are you hunting? We have Black ones too.Saw a big one right up from the saloon off 77 late one night.
Planning on doing some fishing this weekend .My wife and I going to take the Landrover and head over Boreas into Breckenridge Sat. the Aspens were really changing color last weekend.

The whole summer and fall seem like a break. My goat hunt was right of Georgia Pass (go west from Jefferson and stay left at the 'Y' to Jefferson Lake and head west. I do need to chuck some flies though, tried at a private lake in WY, but nothing happening early and the wind came up, but took 3-4 24-26" rainbows on a normal spinning rod later in the morning. Heading up there Friday for a hunt and some fishing if time allows, it's my oldest son's first chance for a big game animal (cow/calf elk) and that's my number one goal, my antelope and fishing all take a back seat.
We were up last weekend to see the aspens at our place and they were great, about 1/3 turned, 1/3 dropped, and 1/3 still green. Love the area in the fall!
