I want to fill up a 55 gallon drum with water near my cabin so I can test your water system... I bought a 500lbs limit cargo carrier so I can put 35 gallons of water on it easily..
I rather not drive the two hours to my cabin with a filled up drum.. Where should I fill it up then? What places are likely to have a hose and be willing to let me do it?
By the way, spend most of this weekend cutting fallen trees and splitting them I to fire... Hard work indeed.
Also, I'm not sure if I'm burning too much wood. We burn about 12 small logs (16" and about 4-5" diameter)in a weekend - Saturday morning until Sunday early noon. Is that a lot?

Many towns have self serve vending machines to sell water . Here it is $.04 a gal. Ask in nearby towns .

I average about 1 log a hour in my wood stove. [24 logs to heat for 24 hrs.]

My experience has been it depends on the type of wood...I typically burn only one log per house of Oak wood....however this past weekend I used 2-3 logs per hour of Ash wood....pine about 2 logs per hour....we had it crankin for most of the weekend since it was so cold as well.

I don't know the route you take from the City up to your place, but if you're like a lot of people you use 87 to 17 and then perhaps 84 to go west.
Ever see a Stewart's Shop on your way (www.stewartsshops.com)? They are a convenience store/gas station chain based out of upstate but with a big presence down the Hudson Valley as well. I know there is one in Goshen; perhaps it's on your way.
Anyway, I have never been to a Stewarts that doesn't have free water and air, and frankly we rely on this when we go camping up in the Adirondacks (free water, that is). Usually around the side or back of a store there will be a spigot with a water hose attached. I bring my own hose assembly, though, and fill up jugs w/o even taking them out of the truck. It's very convenient. Now up in the north country they tend to disconnect these in the winter, but not sure about "down south".
There may be other convenience store types that do the same on your route. It would be a go-to place for me. I've even hit up church after Sunday services. How can they say no? 
Two suggestions when hauling a 500+ lb. 55-gallon drum of water. Block the sides of the drum very securely and lash it down as tightly as you can. Also, if you're only going to fill it partially be aware that water will slosh around and possibly make your little trailer unsafe.
I've even hauled these in the back of the old minivan...wouldn't recommend.

Thanks bobrok. I will look into that store.. I might also call some gas stations and/or camper dump sites and see if they will let me do it.
Sustainfarm - then if you burn 2-3 logs per hour: what do you do when you go to bed? I am sure you don't get up every hour to restock.
I was only able to get 4.5hours of heat form my stove when I packed it with wood but that caused the first 2 hours to be unbearable and I woke me up from the heat... beating the whole purpose.

As you said, camper dump sites are a likely alternative. They cater to the RV crowd, who need to empty their sewage and fill their fresh water tanks before the next no-hookup campsite.
12 small logs in one weekend sounds pretty efficient to me.

my cabin is 14x24. not insulated very well. got a junk voltzgang stove. it heats well, just uses lots of wood. I have a fireplace insert in my fireplace at home. It's a Earth Stove. It uses about a log an hour too, to heat my 1400 sq. ft. home. I put about 6 logs in it to start and re-load every 6-8 hours.

The nearest town to my place sells water at the town hall for a fraction of a cent a gallon. I have a 210 transfer tank that fits in the back of my truck. I have a 600 gallon tank at the cabin tat I top off with the water I haul in. Also I buy those 5gal water bags from Cheaper than Dirt and I fill a few of those whenever I am at the gas station in town. I drink bottled water and only use water from the tank for washing and bathing. I pour a little bleach in the tank now and then to keep the cooties away.

Thanks lawn but I actually have too much water... hhhh
My 300 gallon cistern is full and I probably could have filled 2000 gallon by now. I will actually disconnect it next time I go as I have no need to keep filling it with water.
And this is off a 12ft by 12 ft roof.

I assume you are talking about water use over the summer months, The suggestion by optimistic . That you put eavestrough on your camp , and run it into a rain barrel. would be simpler, for wash up water. Put a fine flyscreen over it keeps the mosquitoes from hatching in it and the critters from drowning. You could still carry your drinking water. old243
