I've decided I will make a 20 X 20 living area in the basement and make steps to go down under the ones I use to go to the loft. I wasn't planning on doing this originally but decided I will now. I think I will use solid wood on the walls. The basement already is studded out with nailers or in my case I need to use screws since it has metal nailers.

I've also closed in an area in the corner of the basement ( 6 X 8 ) insulated it and installed an electric heater on a thermostat which will keep all my water drains and water heater including water tank at whatever temp I want. Right now I have it set at 45 degrees. It is working great.

How full is your barrel and what kind of feed?
How large are the openings?
How do you keep large animals from knocking it around?

Hi tf , I only have had it up two weeks so far. First week was all squirrels and this week I also have some deer visiting. I put 100 LBS of shelled corn in it first week and put another 25 LBS or so in 2nd week. I made two openings about 1 1/2 ft apart on the side facing on the pic. I think the openings are about 2 inches in diameter. I was worried they would be too small but they are working fine as the corn slides out well. I did have it sitting on a skid at first but decided to do away with the skid so corn does not slide out so easy. I also used two ratchet straps to fasten it to the small tree behind it. I put the hooks it the holes on the bottom and the top strap toward the top. I do not know if this will work for bears. I will find out come spring because there is a fair amount of bears around. There was ten in the neighborhood last summer. The pictures I looked at when I got home today are not the best , I need to move my cam a little lower next week. Thanks for checking in.

Love the Cabin! Wanted to ask, your knotty pine where did you purchase it from and is it the 3/4in T&G?
Building my first cabin on our 9 acres NE Missouri. 24x24 with a loft 8X24. planning on doing the knotty pine thoughout and was looking for a supplier with quality pine.

Thanks for the kind words BBF. I will look forward to seeing pictures of your build as you go forth. I actually purchased my pine T & G from a small sawmill about 2 miles from me. His prices went up since I purchased mine but for a pine 1 X 6 X 8 ft. which I used for walls his price is now 3.72 and the 1 X 8 X 8 ft. T & G with center groove which I used for ceiling is $ 5.01 with a 3 % discount with orders over $600 or 5% discount with orders over $ 2000. These were also kiln dried. Non kiln dried for same dimensions would be $2.44 and $ 3.30 respectively. I am sure you may be able to find some sawmills in your area or discounted building supply places where you may purchase lumber. Good Luck Shady Acres
