I would like to do a project using diamond willows. I have a walking stick trying to think of something else. If you have any ideas post it up.

Can't help you with any new ideas but I will say that I have a diamond willow walking stick that I would have carved/made over 30 years ago when posted in Wainwright Alberta. I still use it from time to time.

The willow stick not sure about a wreath but the sand bar willlow I have shown will be a basket/maybe.

I do a lot of waling and use mine a lot. I couldn't imagine how many miles that stick has on it. I stick helps a lot in rough country.

a lamp, a hall tree; cut in half it might make a door frame or a picture frame .nice bit of wood neb. I have never seen it grow in Ont..

I met a guy ,at the earlton plowing match, in northern ont. several years ago . he had a diamond willow cane , I was using a maple cane. He said he was going to see someone in that area , that might know where there was some.
We were in Alaska a few years ago and bought several diamond willow sticks they are beautiful, when finished. Have fun with your project. old243

Have you considered wicker furniture out of the whips? There are a few books out there on how to do it.

The wood is beautiful. Here are some ideas. The ladder is not sturdy enough to climb. It would look amazing as a towel rack in a cabin bath.

Thanks for the ideas. I did some searching and found a few of your ideas. Winters get long for so I'm always working on something I like to make thigns I guess.
Just and old243 I would of thought you would have diamond willow in Ont. I thought pretty common in Canada and northern plains.

It has to grow in western Ontario, I used to cut it in northern Minnesota all the time as a kid. I too think it makes good walking sticks, table legs, lamps, railings etc. Very cool and unique looking.

What causes the diamonds to form? they appear to be the remains of where a side branch had died. Then the limb continuing to grow. We have lots of willows in our swamps, not sure if they look like this. Further north there is lots of tag alders. Will have to check it out. This will give me a spring project.
When we were in Alaska we also saw a place that also collected and sold burls. They were really nice when finished. Old 243

Actually it is very interesting - it is caused by a fungal infection so you can have it form in various species of willow and you can have patches of diamond willow trees next to normal ones.

Yes that is what causes the Diamons. Like you said some willows have it and some don't.

Diamond willow is very interesting and can get addictive trying to find it.
Here is one I found in my backyard here in the Yukon.

Thankyou. It was quite a find. Ive seen lots of DD, but this one is the longest and straightest I've found so far. It should make a nice railing.

Wow, I am going to start keeping an eye open for this stuff. Is it region specific? I dont recall seeing any around in my state (Washington) but wsnt looking for it either.
The only time i had to look for willow is when I was a bad kid and my mom would make me go fetch a willow switch.
