Well, here's a revised option that more closely follows your original plan. When you submitted the plans for a permit did you have all the interior walls laid out and the individual room functions labeled? I was wondering if they had any comments or concerns about the bunkroom? Doesn't it need to have an egress window in case of fire?
The other thing I was curious about was the placement of the stairs from the deck. With the stairs going off to the side the entire deck usually has to be kept clear in order to get to the door. Did you consider putting the stairs coming down from the front (right in line with the door) so that you had some deck space off to the side to put a chair or a bench?

He then built a wooden stove cover that would sit level with rest of the countertop to increase his work area when the stove wasn't being used. When he did want to use the stove the cover lifted off and went into the space behind the stove. I wish I could find that video again. What make of stove did you use?
I have an RV Magic Chef, it already has a stainless cover that closed and gives me my counter space.
I am adding an outward swinging metal security door, it will go and open exactly like your drawings.
Are you building this model?

OK, graveled entire driveway to cabin, 600 + 200 feet beyond to circle loop turnaround. Signs all installed, posted max speed limit of 5mph...

I was thinking about it but I am wanting something that has a fully functional bathroom (tub/shower, composting toilet, sink). I was trying to get everything in with the larger kitchen but couldn't figure out a layout.
I did find it curious that the center of the roof beam doesn't line up on the center of the wall between the kitchen and deck. That would seem to be the natural spot for the beam for it to be supported and yet it is located to the left of the wall and partially over the door. Did you have any trouble doing the framing for the gable and ridge beam at the front of the cabin?

The original plan did have a fully functional bathroom. The main open area is really the bunk room and there is the egress window there.
The ridge board is just that, not load bearing beam. Its a rafter system. But if I had to do it over, I would make the porch end at the 8 foot mark, its slightly over. If it was centered and the load carrying wall inside was moved to dead center, this would give you the extra room in the bunks for 6'3". The interior for/aft wall just supports the rafter ties or ceiling joist is all. The gable walls really dont support that much of the load like the rafter tail walls do. I followed the plants to a "T" but did make the roof much steeper to shed snow. I also added a pier pad in the crawlspace and a beam to the floor and tied it to the middle of the ridge board. There is plans for an upstairs model too. I was going to do that one, but decided not too. I suppose i could add it later. I also use 2X6 on my walls, original plans shows 2X4.

Back to your latest additions, Toyota, everything looks fantastic! I swear that someday you're going to find some folks with a camper in tow waving money at you to see if they can camp for a spell! It looks so professionally done.
I like the signage. Do you keep tabs on the Fire Weather advisories and change the sign when you're there?
(An aside: Thank you for your gracious gift of a sign! I'll let you know when! Fingers crossed, things will be close to wrapped up in the next several weeks. I hope. I'm getting a bit superstitious about jinxing it. It looks like it will be "Pinecone Cabin."  )

I just signed up for the AFF or American Forest Foundation. I fit all the criteria, so I signed up and they will send a forester out to view my land and let me know if I qualify. I know I will.

I have ordered a few of their signs, for each of my main gates, one at the front 20 acres and another sign at the back 20 acre gate. 
I donated some $$$ and will get their monthly publication. Just lots of aids, help etc for maintaining a timber farm. I have a small infestation of western bark beetle right now. Hit a small cluster of young trees (stressed anyway) but I see it got one of my big prized ponderosas. I will not cut it down yet, they actually want dead standing trees as habitat too. But I might want some dry firewood.

Headed back over this weekend. My dad loved to see the updated pictures. Unfortunately, I lost him yesterday. I will no longer be able to share my progress with him. I did spend fathers day with him at breakfast and again for an evening BBQ with burgers. He wanted his ashes on the place. My twin brothers is there now (the twin boys was his pride and joy) and both his parents are over there too. I will make as nice spot for him with a marker.

OK, so there was no confusion as to weather this is public or private land, I clarified that, in my new "State Park Fonts" kit.

Julie, yes, I drive right past an official one going up there. I will maintain mine one level higher (stricter standards). Right now, the area is code blue or moderate. I will run mine yellow. We are under a DNR burn ban. We are protected by DNR, so their bans apply to us. No fireworks at all either. 4th is right around the corner. I hope last years fires are still clear in their minds and are mindful of fire. I may decide to never even install a fire pit. I had one, but removed it for gravel installation so dump truck could get in place and may not set it back in place.

OK, my next project is "Memorial Rock", signage is already made. I wasn't sure if I have a picture of this huge rock, but I found one. It is close to the cabin, deposit by a glacier, its not going anywhere, so I will place my dads ashes there (he passed away 6/21/16) at the base, marker IDing the location and a sign designating this as Memorial Rock. My twin brothers ashes are buried at the property now. I will move him to the base of the rock. I told dad, I was putting him there and moving my twin right next to him. He liked that idea. My dads folks are there also. So the memorial will be for 4 family members. More as time goes including myself. The land will remain in the family. The rock will be sacred ground now. Because of its size, not moving, I know this area will be undisturbed for years to come. Anyway, I will be up there is August with family camping, I will put dad up there then and plant the memorial signage and post pictures. I need to plan for more work, I can not go there to just set and relax. I know, it doesn't seem right, but to me, working on a project there is relaxing to me.

That is SUCH a worthy and beautiful project! What an amazing place for loved ones to be remembered.
I also want to be cremated when the time comes, and you can get plantable urns that contain a seed/dirt for any kind of tree that you want for your region. So your ashes become part of the tree as it grows. That's what I want -- to be planted on my land, with a little plaque by the tree.

Prepping for my next visit this month. I have made 2 picnic tables for my 3 extra camp sites. Only 2 didn't have a picnic table. Now they will. I am also prepping a site/pad for a 20 foot container. I will take it home, armor it up, add ventilation kit and drop it off in the spring. I will weld flanges onto the roof also so I can frame a 4X4 timbers around the edge, then I will put on a pitched roof. I will extend the roof out over the doors to make a porch. That will go up in Spring. Site prep in Sept or October this year. Level an area off, then install a thick bed of gravel, ie about 8 yards.
Also prep a site for the shelter. I plan on harvesting timber off my back 20 acres to build the basic structure. I will have cement poured for the floor. Then add a fireplace/chimney (wifes family all masons, said work party, free labor, you buy all materials)
OK, picnic tables are normally 6 feet long, cost about $4.50 per 8 foot 2X6, wood was ragged looking. I stepped up, bought it in 10 foot length and cut it in half for two 5 foot picnic tables. One could of went 12 footers if you wanted 2 6 foote tables. Because at 8 feet, cutting off 2 feet for scrap didnt make sense. Now I didnt built 8 footer because it needs to fit int he bed of my truck, I have a Pro Tech toolbox and have only 6 feet 3" inches left. I can slide in longer lumber under the box as it stops about 10" from the bed.
I used Behr deck stain/sealer in "chocolate" (same color as everything else around the cabin) in satin, covered perfect in one coat, dries so fast too.
Sign I made using the large 3 3/8" stencil kit. First time for this stencil kit. the sign board is a 2X6.
I have plenty of work now to keep me busy for the rest of this year and next year.

OK, memorial is all in place. Everyone on the list is there now except dad. They are in the order they passed away. Dad being the most recent. Middle initial and last name obscured to protect my ID a bit.

OK, went to a huge garage sale, engulfs the entire town of Packwood Washington, this is done every memorial and labor day weekend. Its the entire weekend, runs from Friday to Monday.

Anyway, went with the wife to locate some antiques. Its huge, traffic jamb in this little town in the foothills of the Cascade range on highway 12. There is plenty of garage sales along the way taking advantage of the garage sale buyers passing through. I stopped at an unofficial one well before the commercialized Packwood one, prices are much better and I picked up a few items.
3 old milk bottles, 4 beaver traps, old clothes iron, rolling pin. Also at an antique store, a buddy of mine picked up for me, several items from the USFS. One was a water bag, its new, never used. I have no idea on its age. The the white cotton bag with a rope for a sling. Also a army green wool blanket, its got the USFS logo on it too. The store keeper said there was a guy who collects USFS gear and he will be bringing lots of it in for sale. He mentioned that when my buddy bough the water bag and wool blanket, he mentioned he was collecting antiques and anything from the USFS.
And I noticed some yard sale signs near my work. Sale was Fri and Sat. Well, on a road test after servicing a truck, I stopped in, was right on my typical route. I asked them for tools or antiques, they said they have an antique tool. So I picked up a block plane that has to be 100+ years old. Anyway, pictures of that.
I am working on a another new sign for fire danger condition. Its big, 36" high, 48" wide and 1.5" thick (its solid and heavy Douglas Fir), will have a roof over it, set at out at the country road and will have a solar dusk to dawn light on it, light will be mounted on underside of the roof. Mounts on 2 post. It will have a sign across the bottom that corresponds with the fire danger pointer (pointer not installed yet) and lets say its code orange or Very High, the sign hangs from the bottom (on dowel pins) and the other signs will be racked in a hanger on the backside. A local resident will update/monitor the actual fire condition.
This will be off the main county road, as you enter the area of lot owners and just before the forest service road begins. This will benefit all land owners in the area. Anyone headed up to Forest Service land will also see it.
I will probably make a special trip to install this sign within a month. Only because my neighbor wants to do a road trip and I said if he drove, I would buy fuel, we will spend the night at the cabin, come back int eh AM. I will take pictures of the installed sign. I'll get a night shot of it too illuminated.
I am working on business cards too. I will post those when I get the finished final draft. Those are looking fantastic. You will want to see those. Stay Tuned!

Having business cards designed. I know its a true timber farm and ranch, but its just a hobby for now. Anyway, the one version with the ponderosa pine back is finalized. The dark wood version looks great, but I am opting for a more western looking wood. I will go with a silvered looking knotty pine. But this is what I have for now. Front and the back. OK, long day, made a full round trip to and from the cabin. I wasnt going back till spring of 2017, but my neighbor wanted to go and put up the fire danger sign. I told him I didnt want to drive, he said he would. I said fine, I will buy fuel and food. Plan was to spend the night, leave early am (left at 4AM today) and work/project was completed so quickly, we headed back home, in my house at 9PM. Long day, tired.
I put the sign up just off the county road on another lot members place with his permission and help. The sign is beneficial to the entire community. Its seen as you drive in or up to the National Forest. After last summers fires, everyone is jumpy on fires, so this will work out well.
I used pressure treated 4X6 post, full 10 footers, 3 feet in the ground. Its a tall sign, visible even when the grasses are tall. Cant miss it. Its about 7 feet tot he ground to the top off the roof.
Also, removing the window covers, I found Bogart the friendly bat. He has been hanging under the exact same window cover for 3 yrs now. I built 2 bat-houses, I can tell if they are occupied, way up in trees close to the cabin. I pulled the cover off, he fell to the ground, was cold and lethargic. I gently pinch a little of the fur on the back of his neck, picked him up gently and put him up against a tree which he locked onto instantly. He hung there for an hour and flew off. Got a great closeup of Bogart too.
And the sign install, all went well.

I just picked up a 20 foot container from James G Murphy auction for $1000 just a few hours ago (well, my cousin acted on my behalf and bid on it). I have a few weeks to remove it from the lot. I will have it dropped off at my cousins place where him and I will amour it up, add ventilation and then clean, paint it. I will add clips along the top of the wall (weld them on) to anchor a 4X4 where I will put a pitched roof on it and extend it out 4 or 6 feet past the door end. Contents inside are not mine, part of another lot
Next is to prep a spot for it, basically a thick bed of gravel is what I need and set it right on the ground.

Well, I still need to get it out of the auction yard and hauled to my cousins place 24 miles away. (Tow company already said no problem at $165 per hour) Then prepped for the cabin property while at my cousins place. I will beef up security (MIG welder and torches, can do anything) add ventilation, brackets to secure a rafter roof system over the top of it and then the real task will be getting it to its final rest spot at the cabin from my cousins place. The big issue is getting it loaded onto a trailer. Being 8 feet 6 inches wide, widest you can go down the road without a pilot car, the deck of the trailer will have to be on top of the wheels, they call this a "deck over" which makes the deck high off the ground. A 20 foot container tips the scales at 4,800 lbs. Once on a trailer, hauling it there wont be an issue (if you dont count cost) and dropping it off be easy too. Its the loading it up that will be the issue. I will prep it in the mean time, prep the pad/final resting spot next time over, then work on the logistics of getting it hauled and set in place. I keep creating more work for myself. I am a glutton for punishment I guess.

OK, 20 foot container is now at my cousins place, 24 miles from auction house. A guy who built a trailer to haul containers answered my add on craigslist. Ended up being a super nice guy and reasonable.
I am going to now head over to my cousins place, a bit of a drive and start adding vents. Will pre build them, then head over. He has one of my MIG welders (Snap-On Muscle MM250L) and we will install vents and add armor over locks. Add brackets to bolt a top plate and attach a pitched roof over it and extend it out to give me a covered area at the door end.
It will be pressure washed and painted in the typical required forest service brown, using an oil based paint.
I had him ask the guy who hauled it how much to take it over to my cabin, he quoted me $700. So I will let him know a week in advance, he will get the job. I head over in spring to clear a pad, have gravel delivered to it and then he will roll in with my container. Set it on a level pad of gravel, then head to Home Depot and get some lumber for the roof section. I will use metal roof for fire reasons too.
