We have four vinyl windows that have vinyl nail fins. Now that we have committed to a design change, I need to remove and reinstall these windows. Unfortunately the windows require the nail fins, so cutting off the nail fin is not an option. Does anyone have experiance with removing windows and keeping the nail fins intack? I am hesitent to use a flat bar being concerned that this approach may shatter the vinyl fin. Currently my plan is to drill out each nail head.

Thanks in advance for any and all advise / thoughts...

Use a crows foot style bar. Made for getting under a nail head and carefully start it between the fin and nail head. Unless you used aluminum roofing nails to install them you should be able to remove the nails.

Stanley makes a nice small tool, made for getting under nail heads and removing them. Builders call it a "Goon Spoon" to undo goons work and re do it right. Its about 10-12" long, a forked spoon at one end, right angel spoon at the other,. Made to hammer on the right angle end to get under the nail head. The fins are usually pretty forgiving (flexible) you can try it on one nail, if there is an issue, the drilling would work. If its ring shank, just drill them.

If installed properly, loosely nailed, you'll be able to drive a flat bar under the nailhead and pry it out. Otherwise, drive the flat bar under the fin and loosen the nail before repositioning the flat bar under the nail head.
