Hi I found my stovepipe chimney sheared off by the snow. What trick is there to prevent the flue from being sheared? I saw a mention of snow slicer...what is that?
My roof is metal and steep. I had installed a new flue with anchors last year.

I saw a thread on this a while back...I thought it was on this site but I can't say for sure. I have seen a few options...one is to put snow stoppers (horizontal straps to hold the snow until it melts) and the other is a metal wedge that you install on the roof just above the chimney. The wedge splits the snow around the chimney as it slides off.
I also saw one where they installed some angle iron between the roof and the chimney. This would serve to both brace the chimney and slice the snow at the same time. I think this is what I will install on my chimney this year. I have a 12:12 pitch so it is unlikely that I will get much accumulation unless we get freezing rain in the beginning of the year to texture the roof.

If I ever had snow trouble on my metal roof, I'd go with something like this.

Look up sno jack. Or build your own. A wide chunk of stainless flatbar, sharpened a bit (optional) laid on its side and gusset it on the uphill side of the pipe. It will slice the snow in half and it will pas right around the chimney. Have good pipe supports on the top also.

Locate the chimney as high on the roof as possible, so that a minimum of snow can accumulate above it. Snow slicers work well with fresh, soft snow, but if the snow sits, melts a bit and freezes into a clump of ice then you have a slow moving glacier tugging at your chimney and slicer both at once. In this case the angle iron idea mentioned above may work well to hold the glacier in place, if the iron is securely bolted.
But a chimney 2 feet from the ridge won't gather enough snow to be a problem to begin with, IMHO
