I had the same problem. Was a shed permit and now a new inspector and had to change to a guest house and septic for a one bedroom will cost in north GA $2200-$2500.

Just wanted to say thanks to Littlecooner. Got crazy with holiday stuff and hadn't been on here in a bit. Appreciate your input (especially the PA health regulations!)

We are in PA as well. We also have been told that a composting toilet needs a septic system. As does any water carried into a building and not carried back out and dumped into the privy holding tank. No provisions in PA whatsoever for a grey water system.
Of course nobody follows up on the dumping of dishwater or shower water, but it is illegal. If you are lucky you township SEO will not care. If they do be prepared to put in a septic field.

In years past, I had some words with the county official's here in North Carolina. My mom & dad had a farm house on 67 acres that was old and cold. Septic tank was put in long before they even thought about perk tests. They were in poor health and I wanted to buy them a small new modular home but would have to pass a perk test before I could do it. Hired an independent "Soil Scientist" who looked all over but never found a spot close. Found a couple that would require an expensive pumping system.

I asked for a variance to put in a composting toilet, or use the old tank...no go. Asked to put in a small mobile home and tie it into the old tank, then remove immediately when my parents passed away or no longer lived there...no go. Blistered some ears, gave up and bought them a condo in town.

Now fast forward to 2014, I own the farm and I would like to put a small weekend cabin there for me to use and maybe retire to. Have not asked yet but I will be asking about composting toilets again soon. Crazy to put in a $15,000.00 septic pump system for a $15,000.00 cabin.

I say all this because I realized something a few days ago. A gentlemen approached me asking to buy it for cattle pasture land. Now It would be perfectly acceptable with the county for 100 cows to be there pooping right on top of the ground 24/7. But they act like one 59 year old man and a composting toilet would be an environmental disaster.....something is wrong with this logic.

JDPugh- on the face of it, I see your point, but the reality is that cow poop doesn't have half the diseases in it that human poop does. Still I don't see why composting toilets don't get more credibility, particularly in rural situations like yours.

Yeah....I understand, but somewhere there should be a happy medium for folks like the OP and my parents.

PS: I may just go to a nice smaller class "A" RV with a composting toilet & solar panels. Already have propane, water and electric on site so I could just plug-in also.

Then my cabin is portable
