I've got my design for my compost toilet almost complete but I'm trying to find the best solution for a cap to the vent pipe. I plan on using PVC for the pipe...what should I be using for the top of this thing to keep rain, bugs etc out but still breathe correctly? Thanks!

Copy what SunMar does. They use a 4" diameter thin wall PVC pipe as the vent pipe. At the top end there is a larger diameter pipe, maybe 6 inch. (Photo below)
The inner pipe stops 2 to 4 inches above the lower edge of the larger pipe. The idea is that only rain that is falling near to perfectly vertical will hit the open end on the 4 inch pipe. If the rain is at even a slight angle from vertical it either hits the outside of the larger pipe, or the inside of the larger pipe. In those cases the water simply runs down the pipe wall and out the open bottom end. The larger pipe is fitted to the inner pipe with three screws and spacers.
There is no cap over the end as caps can slow the stream of vent air. They do work. I can vouch for that as once when I was on the roof curiosity got the better of me. I breathed in with my face above the end of the pipe. Yikes!

let's try that again with a new version... The smaller pipe is a 2" inner, 4" outer. It had a molded plastic adapter to fit the 4" pipe over the 2".
Have not had any problems with bugs entering from the top. There is no screen as that will slow air flow. 4 inch pipe is about the smallest that can work with natural convection air flow. You'll notice the vents used on forest service vault toilets is 12 to 14 inch diameter.

I have he same set up and it also works very well - no bugs or moisture. The diffuser is open around the bottom and lets the rain out around the outside of the pipe. Very simple and effective.

I have one of those Satellite Industries Tufway 150 plastic sani-kan units and it has a large vents stack, maybe 3 to 4" and there is no cap on it at all.

Try this. Working great on my urine diverting toilet. Don't forget the bug screen and silicon chaulk at the appropriate places.

It just creates a low pressure as wind goes around it and across the wide end where the opening is. This will move air outward. Must have airflow to work. In an RV going down the road, this would keep things nice and clear. With a brezze, works on the sani cans too.

Envirolet makes a small turbine vent that fits on a 6 inch PVC pipe. Works great It pulls air through the system even when the power is off. The only issue I had were Wrens trying to build a nest inside. Solved that problem with a strategically placed wren house.

Geez, Climber, I never put the turbine up on my vent. But now I think I have to. Do you have plans for that wren house (;).

No plans for Wren outhouse, it was a gift. Works well keeping the little critters out of the turbine.
